All WPCS UK Area Associations were invited to take part in a Photographic Competition, with each Association submitting 5 photographs, one for each Section and Welsh Part Bred. The entries should be of the animal In Hand, showing the whole body and they should be selected from animals owned by members of the submitting Area Association. Each exhibit was marked out of 10, giving the Area Association a maximum of 50 points. If any animals tied for first place, then the Judge was asked to select the final champion. The images were anonymised before being sent to the Judge, giving only the Section and the year of birth.
This year, the Judge was Mr Kevin Townsend from New Zealand.
"It was an honour to be asked to judge the Ruth Davies Memorial Trophy this year, congratulations to the successful Groups, there were many beautiful Ponies, Cobs and Partbreds to look through. I first met Ruth Davies and Dr Wynne in 1984 when I visited Wales for the first time to visit Studs and Shows and to learn all I could about the Welsh Breed, consequently I stayed at Ceulan whenever I returned to Wales. Ruth was a wonderful host at Ceulan, always cheerful, loved a good chat about all things in life, as well as our love for antiques which we used to go and look around the Shops and Sales. It was a pleasure to host Ruth and Wynne when they came to New Zealand where they met the Welsh Breeders, Dr Wynne judged the 21st North Island Welsh Pony & Cob Show.
I joined the Welsh Pony & Cob Society of New Zealand in 1980, was involved with the Society for 36 years as well as a member of the Judging Panel. I am an Honourary Life Member in Wales and New Zealand. I enjoy and admire all of the Welsh Breeds, but here in New Zealand, I concentrated on breeding Section B, importing Collenna Pledge in 1982 and Gunthwaite Fantasia in 1985. I have always admired the performance ability of Welsh Ponies, Cobs and Partbreds, therefore I tend to like ponies that can move and have good conformation. Also, if it is Welsh I like the pony or Cob to have the bone and substance correct to its Section."
