PSSM1 and PSSM2 - social media postings

The Society has been made aware of social media postings by non-members sharing negative and unsubstantiated information on veterinary matters.

These posts are alarmist and misleading.

Members are reminded that the WPCS has worked closely with the recognised leaders within veterinary science in the UK, the Royal Veterinary College. They have provided the Society with specific advice and guidance on PSSM1 and PSSM 2.

The Society would like to draw the attention of its members to a paper from leading experts in the study of PSSM1 and PSSM2, prepared at the request of the WPCS.

We are indebted to Professor Richard Piercy and his team from the Royal Veterinary College Comparative Neuromuscular Diseases Laboratory for their guidance on this topic, which is fully endorsed by the Society’s Honorary Veterinary Officer. Please follow this link to read the paper:

Professor Richard Piercy addressed the 2022 BEVA Congress, Liverpool in September on ‘Clinicopathological assessments and muscle biopsy in horses with neuromuscular disease’ and ‘Challenges in diagnosing atypical myopathy’
