Welsh Performance

All Welsh Ponies, Cobs and Part-Breds make excellent performance animals, and many people enjoy owning and competing their animals in performance disciplines, from showing under saddle to Cross Country, and dressage to driving. Welsh ponies, cobs and part-breds too make an excellent companion for simply exploring the great outdoors, their hardiness and intelligence gained from centuries of life on the uplands of Wales gives them a great adeptness for exploring, crossing water and jumping.

Why not reward yourself for exploring the countryside with your Welsh Pony, Cob or Part-Bred by taking part in the WPCS Welsh Explorers hacking challenge? More details can be found HERE on our Awards, Competitions & Schemes page.

Showing

Welsh Ponies and Cobs have dominated the showing rings for many years and will continue to for years to come.  Their presence across all sections in the ridden classes never go amiss. Side saddle is also becoming very popular particularly within the pony sections.

Dressage

Welsh Ponies and Cobs are known for their excellent paces and endurance, their natural talent recognised worldwide. Their fluidity and surefootedness advertises the breeds most recognised characteristics such as, athletic, forward going, active but collected. The Part Bred Ponies and Cobs also thrive in Dressage with the features of the cobs, crossed with other breeds, becoming increasingly popular.

Driving

The Welsh Ponies and Cobs are well known for their input into the driving world with their hardiness being ideal to perform in harness.  Their strength and agility allows them to confidently pull the carts with extended forelegs from the shoulder, hocks flexed, thus displaying powerful leverage.

Jumping, Cross Country and Working Hunter

The Welsh Ponies and Cobs athletic abilities make them a great contender in jumping at the various different events. All sections are regular competitors at these events with all of 2023 HOYS working hunter class winners being Welsh animals.  Alongside Ilar Vincent competing in the Badminton Horse Trial’s Mitsubishi Motor cup in 2019. Not forgetting the Part Bred’s with the mixture of the Welsh hardiness, agility and strength mixed with, for example, a thoroughbred’s stamina and lean muscular body is the recipe for success.

Pony Racing

One activity where Welsh ponies and their part-breds excel is in Pony Racing. It is the perfect way to improve your knowledge, fitness, confidence and above all make new friends and have fun. The Pony Racing Authority run taster days at racecourses around the country for children aged between 7-15yrs. If you are a member of Pony Club, you can get involved via the Pony Club racing days.
