2007 Competitors gather for the camera.

This popular event again took place on the eve of the National Show at Shrewsbury and attracted entries from many parts of the UK. Candidates forward had been previously selected by their respective associations with most associations offering their members training prior to the event. To support the excellent work done by the associations, Jeff and Janice Parry of the Talponciau Stud kindly awarded a £50 bursary for future training and the inaugural cheque made its way to the Ceredigion Association

For the first time four section C ponies were used for the competition; they provided much debate for judges and competitors alike. Judges assessing were Mrs Kathleen James and Mr Len Bigley with Dr Wynne Davies as support for any bilingual candidates wishing to take the interview in Welsh. Both judges commented very favourably on the overall standard of the competitors taking part and, after further interview, Jamie Frost was the unanimous choice of both judges for the 2007 title.

Bursary sponsors, Jeff and Janice Parry with overall winner, Jamie Frost

Twenty-five year old Jamie Frost, whose main interests are Welsh section B and Welsh Part-bred ponies, represented the South Western Association. He received his overall award, the Llanarth Trophy, from Len Bigley. Jamie also received a brass medal commemorating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the South African Society from Gustav Karlsson. The winning young judge completed his spoils for the night with a bespoke riding stick kindly presented by Council member, Mike Daley.

The prize money for the event was kindly sponsored by Mrs Kathleen James, who takes an active interest in the young people of the society.

The competition could not go ahead without the support of many; special mention go to the suppliers of ponies, timekeepers Delyth Simmons and Adrian Pearce, judges, sponsors, the associations for actively encouraging the young people taking part and Judges’ Committee chairman, Mrs Jocelyn Price, whose efforts over many years have been fundamental to the success of the competition.
