A record number of entries came forward for the 2004 Welsh Pony and
Cob Society Young Judges Competition held in conjunction with the
National Welsh Show at Shrewsbury. The move from the Royal Welsh Show
proved very successful allowing judges more time to assess and provide
feedback to the young people. Candidates came from all parts of the UK
to be assessed by Anne Bigley (Llanarth) and David Davies (Ceulan). It
turned out to be probably the most closely fought competition since
its inception; very few marks separated the candidates.
Fourteen-year-old Jenna Dart from Gwynedd was the overall winner
retaining the Geler Perpetual Trophy kindly presented by the Lloyd
family. In runner-up position was the winner of the junior section,
Eastern Association member, Holly Jones-McCutcheon who is twelve years
old and comes from Wisbech in Cambridgeshire.
Special thanks go to the Jill & Kitty Williams (Glebedale) and Jeff &
Janice Parry (Talponciau) for supplying the ponies, Kathleen James for
sponsorship of the prize money, the judges, Mrs Bigley and Mr Davies
and the time keeper, Adrian Pearce.
This competition is based in the various Associations of which many do
an excellent job by encouraging and fostering the needs of the young
people. Without exception, every young person forward on the day was a
credit to his/her Association. Hopefully we will see another excellent
turnout next year when candidates will once more compete to take home
the Geler Trophy.
