At the 2006 World Driving Championships held in Italy at Pratoni del Vivano near Rome, the Great Britain Single Horse Team comprising of two hackneys and a Welsh cob brought back home the Team Gold Medal. The team representatives were selected on points gained at events throughout the season. The cob in question was David and Geraldine Mathews’ fourteen year old Carnwallon Boneddwr driven by their son David with their other son Richard ‘on the back step’ of the vehicle, a truly family affair. They are however no strangers to success, as Boneddwr has been a big winner for the Mathews family for several seasons; twice winner of the prestigious Royal Windsor Trials, he was also National Champion in 2002 followed by an international win in Belgium in 2003. David Mathews bought Boneddwr as a foal from his breeder Mr C S Tonge; he is by Glanteifi Boneddwr and out of Treffald Halley’s Comet, a daughter of Trevallion ap Comet. David Mathews is also a breeder in his own right having joined the WPCS in 1968 and registered cobs under his Chiltern prefix.
Carnwallon Boneddwr’s success shows once again the outstanding versatility of our Welsh
breeds.
