Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells Competitors turned up from all over Britain, plus some from overseas owners to total 731 entries for the Royal Welsh Winter Fair. The largest entry was for section A filly foals (101) of which 66 turned up; they could not all be accommodated together so the class was split with the top two in each half competing against each other to decide who would go forward for the championship. With such large classes on the first day, it was well past the hour of darkness before the judging of section B began. Judge of the supreme, Mr Emrys Bowen MRCVS, selected the section B yearling colt Melau Montanna with the section C colt foal Caebryn Endeavour reserve and the coloured yearling filly Penstrumbly Gone Dancing in third place. A few minutes earlier Mr John Hendy had also selected Melau Montanna for supreme Welsh but with the section D filly foal Fronarth Miriam reserve. ![]() Caebryn Endeavour ![]() Fronarth Miriam Melau Montanna, full-brother to Melau Morocco which sold for £5,500 to top the section B’s at the 2008 Fayre Oaks Sale, was shown by Mr Bobby Roberts for Wyn and Mandy Jones of the Melau Stud. Reserve champion section B was the filly foal Heniarth Ting-a-Ling who won 1st prizes at the English Royal and National Championships and was champion at the National Foal Show on this site in October. ![]() Melau Montana Caebryn Endeavour is the first foal out of Mrs Veronica Layton’s many-times champion Parvadean Denise and was overall supreme at the October National Foal Show. Reserve section C champion was Mr Roger Davies’ yearling colt Hywi Tango expertly shown by thirteen-year-old Patrick McBride. Tango is sired by the 2006 Royal Welsh champion Gellihaf Brenin. ![]() Hywi Tango The section D champion, the Jones family’s Fronarth Miriam has a pedigree full of Royal Welsh champions and the reserve champion Mrs Julie Evans’ colt foal Haighmoor Victor’s Image has similar breeding being sired by her 1999 Royal Welsh champion Fronarth Victor. ![]() Haighmoor Victor's Image Julian and Hayley Williams’ bay yearling filly Cilmery First Edition was section A champion. This great-striding filly moves like her grand-sire the 1997 Horse Of The Year Show reserve champion Trefaes Taran. Her sire Maescwm Roscoe produces stock reminiscent of his grand-sire, the great Criban Bantam foaled over sixty years ago in 1947. Reserve section A champion was another good mover, the grey colt foal Dargale Henri bought by Adam and Karen Fletcher when he failed to sell at Hay-on-Wye. The two halves of the filly class were headed by Peter and Ann Jones’ Friarly Height of Fashion by Friars Rebel and Miss Carys Jones’ grey Islyn Hyfryd from the same family as Lacy Buzbee sold for £9,200 on the Fayre Oaks Sale and it was Height of Fashion who was selected as best overall filly. ![]() Cilmery First Edition ![]() Friarly Height of Fashion Photography by M. Cameo had already been champion on her five previous showring appearances. Reserve champion was the colt Willowlands Reflection owned by the Francis family of Solihull but his sire and dam Litton Reflection and Litton Cascade were both bred locally at Knighton, Powys. The champion coloured who was also champion Welsh part-bred was Mr Eurig Eynon’s Penstrumbly Gone Dancing bred by Mrs Kath Hall. Gone Dancing is one of many outstanding part-breds sired by the Welsh cob Yorkin Come Lucky who was left to Kath Hall on the death of his breeder/owner Mr Clive Arrand. Reserve champion part-bred was Telynau Stud’s Telynau Marchese who is the seventh generation of Telynau ponies to have won at either the summer Royal Welsh or at the Winter Fair. Reserve champion coloured was the Faulkner family’s Degla Romany Rose sired by the Welsh cob stallion Ebbw Trooper. ![]() President Len Bigley, Catryn Bigley commenting on the show with S4C Photograph by M.
