Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells Despite the cold and the snow, the Royal Welsh Winter Fair still attracted an attendance of 24,336 and the horse and pony exhibits turned up in strength. Over 40 from the 73 entries in the section A filly foal class proved too many to be accommodated all together in the judging ring and exhibitors were pleased when it was announced that the class would be split and the prizemoney doubled! For the supreme championship, RW Honorary Director of Horses Dillwyn Thomas presented a trophy in memory of his wife Barbara who passed away this year. Mr Thomas also judged this competition and awarded it to Jane Mabbett’s bay yearling colt Highmead Sheer Difference produced by John James and champion of the Riding Pony Breeding section. Jane also won this section championship last year with the yearling filly Highmead Maybe Forever, both sired by her Highmead Forever Free. Highmead Sheer Chance from the same dam as Sheer Difference is one of the most successful riding ponies in the country and qualified for the HOYS Charlotte Morgan 148 cm Riding Pony Of The Year at the NPS Show. ![]() Highmead Sheer Difference Photograph by Mili Peel The reserve supreme award went to Len and Ann Bigley’s grey section B yearling filly Llanarth Delilah who, a few minutes previously, had been awarded the Overall Welsh championship and the Vardra trophy presented for the first time this year. Delilah is a similar stamp to Llanarth’s Stud’s Llanarth Camilla HOYS Cuddy qualifier at Lincoln County last year; both are sired by Douthwaite Signwriter who has qualified for the HOYS Cuddy / Templeton four times. Delilah’s dam Llanarth Dulcie is one of the oldest mares at the Llanarth Stud and she is a grand-daughter of Eden Blue Bunting who started off the Carolinas Stud in 1966.

Da Vinci was the top-priced colt foal at £1,700 when bought on the Fayre Oaks Sale last year. Da Vinci’s sire Glansevin Graffiti has now returned to Holland after two very successful showing and stud years at Hilin.

This good-moving filly is sired by Glenwood Siarl out of Friars Lovebird and was the only Welsh foal to capture a championship award, a remarkable feat from 166 entries. Reserve section A champion was another good-moving filly, the grey yearling Doddenhill Coral Chloe produced by Adam Fletcher for the Yarnold-Wright family.

His Majesty, who was the biggest animal at the Show, is sired by Thorneyside Flyer who is also grand-sire of Simon Bigley’s stunning winning section D colt foal Llanarth Fiery Jack. Fiery Jack is sired by Menai Sparkling Magic which the Llanarth Stud leased from Germany where his progeny have been exceptional. Reserve champion to His Majesty was the second prizewinner from the same class, Teg and Mel Jones’ home-bred Deytheur Brenin ap Playboy who hails from a long line of winners bred at Deytheur. ![]() Thorneyside His Majesty Photograph by Mili Peel Section C’s attracted a record 96 entries and their champion was the chestnut roan yearling colt Karnarth Rocky Balboa produced in top form by the Tawelfan Stud for Karen Hepple of County Durham. Roger Davies’ very promising yearling filly Hywi Pollyanna who was reserve champion is another with “Thorneyside” connections being sired by Thorneyside The Intruder. Henrie Leeuwenhagg of Rossum, Holland was very pleased with his Brightwells Royal Welsh Sale purchases, Abergavenny Emperor at £1,600 and Swffryd Sam Tan at £400 when they were awarded 1st and 2nd places in the colt foal class from 33 entries.
![]() Karnarth Rocky Balboa Photograph by Mili Peel Sport horses attracted 41 entries for their two classes, both champion and reserve being yearlings. Champion was Dilwyn Williams’ black filly Daughter of Darkness from Pontyberem, Llanelli and reserve was Mrs L Williams’ Cudlic Appollo from Milford Haven. Cilmaengwyn Stud’s skewbald filly foal of traditional type Cilmaengwyn Dancing Queen , champion of the coloureds, has been a good winner at previous Foal Shows. For the newly-introduced Mountain and Moorland section, only Shetland ponies turned up with the championship going to June Lewis-Hughes’ piebald filly foal from Christine Gray’s golden dun yearling Enigma Salome.
