The Veteran Horse Society now boasts a membership of over 2000 members and the highlight of the Society’s showing season is the Dobson and Horrell Veteran Horse Showing Championship. From over 200 qualifying classes countrywide, ten veterans made it through to the prestigious final before a record crowd in the Grand Hall at Olympia and taking the 2008 crown was the grey Welsh Part-bred gelding Murrum Park Phantom ridden by seventeen year old Katie Marfleet.  Murrum Park Phantom Photograph by Real Time Imaging Bred in Australia, the rising nineteen year old has rarely been out of the headlines since arriving in the UK in October 2006 with many wins not only in showing but also in the dressage arena where he has represented GB at International level. He was the winner of the Search for a Star Show Pony at HOYS in 2007 a few weeks after taking the Supreme Competition Horse/Pony at the PUK Summer Championships. In 2008 he returned to PUK to again take the Competition Title but also added HOYS Show Hunter Pony qualification in a week when he also took the Dressage to Music Championship. He is a real character both at home and in the public gaze; give him lights, music and a crowd, preferable cheering, and he thinks the show has been put on for him and performs accordingly – as the Olympia crowd can bear witness to this year. Though bred in Australia he combines some of the best of British pony breeding; his sire Rotherwood Footlight was a son of that grand matron Rotherwood Peepshow, herself a daughter of Chirk Caradoc, and his dam, Bologamy Peoini, though Australian bred traces her lines back to the best of Criban, Coed Coch and Bwlch breeding. In Murrum Park Phantom, the Welsh Stud Book could not have asked for a better ambassador to show the London crowds the value of Welsh breeding in producing the ‘Animal for all Occasions’ – the Welsh Part-bred. |
