Welfare of Animals during Transport

Are you aware of the regulations?

New EU rules for transporting animals came into force in January 2007.  These aim to improve the welfare of animals during transport and include requirements for anyone moving live vertebrate animals in connection with an economic activity i.e. as part of a business.

One of these requirements is for those transporting farm livestock, horses or poultry on journeys over 65km, must complete a competence assessment and hold a certificate by 5th January 2008.

Due to the onset of Foot and Mouth and Bluetongue, the Welsh Assembly Government agreed that for domestic journeys only there would be no enforcement of this requirement until the end of April 2008.

In association with ADAS, the Welsh Assembly Government has organised a series of awareness sessions across Wales to explain the Regulations, and how you can ensure you are complying with the Regulations requirements.   All those who transport animals as part of a business are encouraged to attend their nearest event.

Each venue opens at 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start:

10th March

Royal Welsh Pavilion

11th March

Celtica, Machynlleth

18th March

Quins Club, Carmarthen (TBC)

19th March

Mariners, Haverfordwest

26th March

Coleg Meirion (TBC)

27th March

Brooke House Mill

Assessments for competence are carried out by independent bodies designated by the Welsh Assembly Government.  Competence certificates can only be awarded by these accredited organisations.
