The Swedish “Welsh” year started with the Stallion Show in April where voluntary grading of stallions and colts takes place. The grading is similar to the old grading and stallions who gain 40 points or more are eligible to our Kvalitetsbok (Qualitybook); many breeders aim to qualify their colts or stallions for the book and often after licensing are shown when three or four years old.

Forty one stallions attended for inspection in April 2007. Only one two year old Welsh Mountain colt, Ekbäcken Jack Frost (Heniarth Mr Milligan x Ekbäckens Jasmine), bred by Inger Becker, Valdemarsvik, and owned by Joanna Wikman, Heberg passed the test with 40 points. He was Mr Milligan’s second son to gain recognition in Sweden. Two older stallions also qualified for the book. Moondeligt Idefix (Verdrefawr Ifor x Pentyrch Delilah) gained 40 points; he is owned and bred by Ilona Pykäläinen, Finland, and leased to Sweden by Roland Nilsson and Anne-Marie Wannling. The four year old Rosinas Last Storm (Brierdene Toryn x Brierdene Nerys) owned by Ole Kristian Jahhr from Norway also passed the test with 41 points.

15 Welsh Pony Section B colts and stallions were shown but only two passed the critical eyes of the jury. Two three year old colts qualified and in first place with 41 points was Cwrtycadno Meredydd (Millcroft Royal Lustre x Talhaeam Eirlys Y Pasc). Bred in the UK by Miss Megan Lewis, he was bought as a foal by Ingela Johansson, Bredaryd. Later he was awarded Champion Stallion of all the newly qualified stallions. The other three year old colt was Our Bellmondo (Coutlhard x Bostorp Belise) with 40 points, bred and owned by Heléne Berg, Åtvidaberg.

Even though the Section C is by far the smallest section, we are delighted to see new stallions every year. This year two year old Pentyparc Shonnyn Ddu (Gweunydd Sionyn x Seren Mai) gained his approval; bred in UK he is jointly owned by Marianne Wessel, Norway, and Yvette Peterson, Läckeby, Sweden. The three year old colt, Ias Coed Hedegog bred in Sweden by Christina Blomquist, Leksand, also earned a place in the book with 40 points; he is by Henfynyw Tywysog out of Rhandir Ifanna.

Six Section Ds were presented and two gained their qualification; the three year old Gwynfaes Manawydan (Gwynfaes Culwch x Gwynfaes Goleuddydd) which was imported as a foal by Anna & Maud Enmark, Ljungskile scored 40 points and the 15 year old, Swalesmoor Brenin Aur (Parc Sir Geirant x Swalesmoor Brenhines) shown by his breeder R D Parker but leased to Susanne Lindh, Stenstorp. Brenin Aur had 41 points.

Eight Welsh Part-bred stallions were shown but only one reached the 40 mark, namely E G Goodwin (Veronas Gerswin x Dordonge) owned by Liane Josefsson, Valla and bred by EG Stud, Nyköping. Members of the jury were David Blair, UK, Morgan Johnsson, Gunnar Hoff and Anna Jutestrand Tollbom, Sweden.

The Spring-Show judged by David Blair, Waxwing Stud, had 36 competitors of all ages and all sections. Champion Section A was Rosinas Last Storm with two year old Molstabergs Lord Milligan (Heniarth Mr Milligan x Nerwyn Lorna) as reserve. Champion Section B and also supreme was Eyarth Pavarotti (Eyarth Tacoma x Carwed Prima Donna) bred at Eyarth Stud, UK, and owned by The Svensson Family, Trollhättan. Unfortunately, due to a veterinary fault, he could not qualify for the Qualitybook. Reserve Champion section B was Cwrtycadno Meredydd. Champion Section D was Swalesmoor Brenin Aur, who also was reserve Supreme Champion; reserve Champion Section D was Tyrrestrups Highlight.
