BRIGHTWELLS ROYAL WELSH SPRING SALE Owing to the usual buildings being already set up for the forthcoming Royal Welsh Smallholder and Garden Festival, for the first time ever the Brightwells Spring Sale was held outdoors. The favourable weather and extended seating of the Show grandstand contributed to a very successful Sale and another “first”: a four-figure average of £1,038 up from £915 in 2004. With a similar number of entries catalogued (276) as last year, the Sale total increased from £156,550 to £203,700 and of those present (252), 195 were sold (77%). Continental purchasers were very much in evidence with 8 sold to Germany, 7 to Sweden and 4 to Norway. The greatest demand was for the “broken to ride and drive” animals, 73 of them averaging £1,462 and top of the Sale was Sue Day’s four-year-old 160 cm section D gelding Cadernid Gwalch-y-Gwynt, bred in Carmarthen and sired by the 1995 Royal Welsh champion Gellifach ap Dafydd. He was bought by the Andersson family of Uppsala, Sweden for £3,900. Other section D geldings to make £3,000 were the five-year-old chestnut Emeraldisle Cymro (£3,200 to Angela Snow of Sinton Green, Worcestershire), the nine-year-old dun Pontardawe The Sandman (£3,000 to Mrs Thomas of Crymych) and the three-year-old bay Maesyfelin Angelo’s Magic (£3,000 to Alan Jupe of Milford-on-Sea, Hampshire). Two eight-year-old “Parc” mares topped the ridden females, the bay Parc Mirain selling to Anna Johnson of Stoke-on-Trent for £3,000 and the chestnut Parc Pandora at £2,500 to Judith Bolas of Abbeymeade, Gloucester. The ten-year-old ridden stallion Tireinon Roger went to Hilde Solberg of Roldal, Norway for £2,000. Twelve-year-old Robyn Howell of Llantrisant rode the section B gelding Cottrell Laughter for her mother and the section D gelding Merddog Mastermind for her grandmother. Having been amongst the leaders for the Howell family for five years, Laughter will be much missed on the Welsh show-circuit and topped the section B’s at £2,700 and Mastermind added another £2,600. Both were bought by the Cotswold Manor Stud of Chipping Norton who added variety by buying the ridden section C gelding Dhanak Respect for £1,200. Following the death of David Griffiths of the Helgwm Stud, Llandeilo the Stud has been reduced to two breeding mares and Steve Williams of Cowbridge bought both 2002 foals. He sold the three-year-old palomino filly Helgwm Haelwyn, a consistent winner in South Wales, to top the section A’s at £2,000 to the Prater family of Cwmsychpant, Llanybyther. There was also an excellent trade for the top quality breeding section C’s and D’s. Shirley Williams of Blackwood sold a very promising section C filly Pantyfid Toy Princess to Shaun O’Reilly of Southfleet, Kent for £2,000 and the Sakama Stud, County Durham sold the five-year-old bay section D stallion Alltwalis Traveller to Paul Willis of Southampton for £3,000 and his two-year-old son Sakama Dafydd Ddu to George Huscroft of Northumberland for £1,600. John Merrick’s black section D yearling filly Brynithon Sapphire stayed in Wales at £2,750 bought by Glyn Jones of Aberhosan, Machynlleth. Eurig Eynon’s 144 cm four-year-old dun gelding The Done Thing topped the part-breds at £2,800 followed closely at £2,750 by the two-year-old skewbald filly Ranchella Rose Gold who was placed in the CHAPS classes at last year’s Royal Welsh show as was also her sire Diggers Gold. Four of the five sets of WPCS Journals offered went to Holland.
