BRIGHTWELLS SPRING SALE OF WELSH PONIES AND COBS

171 of the 223 animals offered from a total catalogue of 265 entries at the Brightwells Spring Sale of Welsh Ponies and Cobs sold for a total of £156,550 with 34 section A's averaging £534, 79 section C's and D's in hand averaging £850 and broken to ride at £1,272 and 40 geldings and part-breds averaged £1,284. 6 Cobs were sold to Germany and the section A leading-rein mare Joiners Palm sold to Gunn Johansson of Sweden for £900.

The eight-year-old section D gelding Tyreos Red Admiral consigned by Paul Harper of Pontardulais topped the Sale at £4,500. Produced by the Popsters Stud of Elton, Gloucester and ridden by head girl Heidi Bennett, Red Admiral was the winner of many ridden championships last year, including the Royal Bath and West and City of Swansea and he was bought by Jenna Dart of Holyhead, Anglesey.

There was also good demand for section D stallions, the four-year-old Westdawn Morning Flyer fetched £2,700 from Mr Barr of Lewes; Fronarth Stud, Llanon sold a son of Royal Welsh champion Ebbw Victor, the two-year-old colt Fronarth Ronaldo for £2,550 to Kerry Saunders of Stoke-on-Trent and Robert Manchip of Ffald Stud, Llanhari paid £1,950 for the fourteen-year-old former Royal Welsh winner Hwylog Diplomat. Shirley Heavens of Nailsea, Bristol paid £1,600 for a very promising yearling colt Powysvalley Telynor from Phil Pugh of Adfa, Newtown.

Two two-year-old fillies topped the section D females at £1,800; Mrs George of Coed Cae Uchaf Farm, Crickhowell purchasing the dun filly Sakama Lucky Lady a grand-daughter of the Canadian ridden champion Deytheur Dai and Sara Ackers of Parciau, Caernarfon the bay filly Cruglwyd Edwina bred at Capel Iwan, Newcastle Emlyn. Haydn Hudson of Llandovery sold another bay two-year-old filly Maesyfelin Pride for £1,700 to Mrs Lomas of Sandford, Winscombe who also bought a four-year-old mare Pantygronw Rhiannon bred at Glynarthen, Llandysul for £1,650.

Another winner of many championships, the ten-year-old ridden stallion Swffryd Viking Warrior from Crumlin, Gwent topped the section C's at £2,000 selling to Emma Medlam of Chichester. Amongst the other ridden section C's the five-year-old palomino gelding Popsters Bootlegger from Imogene Aylwin of Dorset sold to a cash purchaser for £1,900 and the four-year-old black mare Porchin Belle was very impressive ridden by ten-year-old Robyn Howell of Tonyrefail and she was bought by the local Wells family of Cwmhinddu for £1,750. With the in-hand section C's, the two-year-old colt Starcrest Ronaldo, half-brother to the Olympia ridden champion Starcrest Discovery went to Doncaster at £1,600 and Martin Grist of Ebbw Vale sold the nine-year-old show-winning mare Bryncefn Abbi for £1,550.

Star attraction amongst the section A's was Synod Stud's seven-year-old stallion Synod Gucci; a sire of top foals, he was bought by Sue Edwards of Cwmbach, Whitland for £2,500. There were only two section B's offered with the nine-year-old mare Lennards Galardia selling for £1,000 to Lisa Spencer of Tadley.

Amongst the part-breds, the four-year-old section D x TB Manorfields Tamsin topped the horses at £1,600 and Raymond Roberts of Bodedern, Anglesey paid £1,450 for the top pony, the piebald mare Camlough Kitty.
