There was much increased demand at the Brightwells Royal Welsh Spring Sale of Welsh ponies, cobs and part-breds with a sale total of £154,840, up from £128,615 last year. 176 lots were sold, averaging £880, with eight sold to Germany, three to Holland and one each to Norway and France.
Greatest interest was received for ridden geldings, with 33 selling for £43,920, averaging £1,331, and these included the top lot of the Sale, the six-year-old chestnut cob gelding Arllwyn Snowdrop, for which Mrs Kerton of Abertridwr, Caerphilly paid £3,100. Snowdrop proved to be a spectacular performer, and was consigned by Mrs Phillips of Michaelstone-y-Fedw, Cardiff, who specialises in producing ridden Welsh cob geldings, which have topped these Sales previously. Stormydown Black Diamond, bred by John and Sooraya Cooke of Bridgend, winner of many ridden championships, sold to Mr Turnbull of Doncaster for £2,400.
Last year's top Section A gelding at £1,050 was Fairstoke Spring Sonata from the Fairstoke/Lapstone Stud in Hampshire; this time it was Lapstone Xavier, bred at the same stud, and he sold for £1,150.

The top part-bred was the four-year-old mare Dolau Polly, which sold for £2,350; bred and consigned by octogenarian farmer Megan Davies of Berriew, Powys, Polly is one of a family of performers which have excelled throughout Britain. Polly was sired by Fronarth Victor, and it was Victor's smart yearling son Haighmoor Cadog which topped the breeding cobs at £2,600, selling to Gareth Jones and Justin Parfitt of Tyrheinallt Farm, Abergavenny. Cadog was bred and owned by Julie Evans of Haighmoor Stud, Llanfyllin, Powys, who also sold the top yearling Haighmoor Fflach for £3,500 at last year's sale. Fronarth Stud's own five-year-old mare Fronarth Tywysoges Ddu sold for £2,000 to Mrs Challinger of Wainscott, Kent.

The star lot of the female cobs was the six-year-old bay mare Blaenyresgair D's Delta, a beautiful mare of a type hard to find, and she will be a wonderful ambassador for the breed in Norway, having been purchased by Wenche Lanner for £2,500. Delta was produced by Nebo Stud for her owner/breeder Mrs Sandra Ray of Bontnewydd, Aberystwyth.

Other cobs to sell for £2,000 were the eight-year-old stallion Selattyn Sam Thomas from the Hughes family of Oswestry, the six-year-old bay mare Maesyfelin Lady Jane from Haydn Hudson of Llandovery, and the black yearling filly Brynithon Royal Princess from John Merrick of Crickhowell. Popsters Stud of Elton, Gloucester bought two mares, the 14-year-old chestnut Ilar Betty for £2,500 and the seven-year-old driving mare Brynaur Catrin for £2,200.

The top Section A and Section C were both four-year-old stallions, the Section A being the four-year-old palomino stallion Blaenau Golden Sovereign, bred by Glyn Greenow of Crickhowell and sold by Mr Oliver of Cwmllynfell, Swansea for £1,800 to June Stacey of Llansantffraed, Powys. The Section C was the bay stallion Tyssul Glyndwr from the leading stud of Mr and Mrs Alun Lewis, and he went to another leading stud, the Cefn Stud of Mr Colin Davies on the Gower, for £1,700. The top buyer was Mr Sallis of Stoke-on-Trent, who bought 15 lots including the four palominos: the yearling Section C filly Swffryd Sara (£1,500), the three-year-old Section D filly Hydehouse Bo (£1,750), the yearling Section D colt Craigcoch Midas (£1,120) and the three-year-old part-bred gelding Debevans Taurus (£1,750).
Dr Wynne Davies
