Top of the Sale (lot 10) at £8,000 was John and Pat Hart’s home-bred six-year-old section D bay gelding Mycathlly True Grit whose 2006 winnings included 2nd Llanarth Winter Final (P UK), 3rd Royal Welsh Junior Gelding and 1st and champion M & M Open Ridden Championships (P UK). True Grit was bought by Martin and Rhian Rees of the Coach House, Michaelston-le-Pit near Cardiff who sold lot 9 (section B chestnut gelding Hollyvale Kadet) and were most impressed by the superb temperament of True Grit in the next-door stable! The Rees three sons William, Alun and James are often to be seen hacking out in the Vale of Glamorgan on their ponies Rosedale Titania, Crawel Zephryne and the home-bred Remills Tasleen and now father Martin on True Grit will make up a foursome. There was a good trade for section D ridden geldings, others which sold well were the six-year-old bay Hengwm Red Admiral (£2,200 to A Staniland, Shropshire), five -year-old palomino Merlena Caio and bay Geler Brenin (£2,500 and £2,200, both to R Edwards of Bolton), four-year-old chestnut Nye The Boss (£2,600 to Mrs A Rumbold, Inverness), four-year-old bay Osbourn Glyn (£3,400 to Mrs V George, Warwickshire) and the four-year-old Odwyn Samuel which put up a lovely show ridden by fourteen-year-old Robyn Howell (£2,200 to Miss K Foster, Epsom). The piebald yearling filly Sunny Amazing Grace sold for £3,100 to Nicki McGrail of Wyncolls Farm. Two section C ridden geldings sold for £1,800; they were the nine-year-old chestnut Hywi General (to Miss K Foster of Epsom) and the four-year-old cream Popsters Lottery (to Mrs J Hampton of Newcastle-under-Lyme). The star of the section A’s was John and Gail Roberts’s eight-year-old palomino stallion Nantlais Solomon who has been a good winner on the South Wales circuit; he was bought by the Earlsmeadow Stud, Neath for £2,200. The seven-year-old lead-rein mare Thistledown Chloe sold for £1,700 to Mrs Vaughan of Newark and two four-year-old lead-rein ponies sold for £1,300, the gelding Nantlais Dani to Ms E James of Shaftesbury, Dorset and the mare Rhydllech Red Saffron to W Williams of Manchester. The fourteen-year-old section B stallion Ddeunant Spotlight who has won championships in hand and under saddle sold for £1,150 to the Renkum Stud. The fourteen-year-old chestnut section C mare Synod Mary Ann, sister to four champions, created much interest and was bought by Andre and Mark Swistun of the Llanmorlais Stud, Swansea for £5,000. Octogenarian breeder Colin Davies of the Cefn Stud, Gower sold the eight-year-old section C stallion Tyssul Glyndwr for £1,150 and replaced him at £950 with the thirteen-year-old well-known stock-getter Newbrook Reflection, a true replica of his sire, the 1989 Olympia ridden champion Persie Ramrod. Top of the breeding Cobs at £4,500 was Paith Stud’s exquisite eight-year-old black mare Paith Lleucu’s Ifanna, daughter of the Royal Welsh winner Llanarth Lleucu. Ifanna was not put in foal last year so that she could be broken to saddle where her half-sisters have created such a name for themselves. Ifanna stays in Wales being bought by G H Jones of Taiforgan, Pwllheli. John Merrick’s stunning two-year-old colt Brynithon A-Hab, 3rd prizewinner at the Royal Welsh also stays in Wales after being bought by D Davies of Llanfairfechan for £4,000. The three-year-old colt Minyffordd Merryman, son of the Royal Welsh winner Minyffordd Maid Marion sold for £3,000 to D Matthews of Bedlinog.
