South Eastern WPCA - Spring Show 2009

Yet another SEWPCA Spring show, yet another new venue! Saturday March 14th, saw SEWPCA, the South Eastern Welsh Pony and Cob Association, hold their Spring show at Merriestwood Campus, Guildford, with amazing success.

Both inhand and ridden ponies turned out in force, the car park filled up surprisingly quickly. In the inhand ring, Mr John Lynn found his section A inhand winner in Ceri Fells home bred stallion, Brynseion Cadivor and rerserve to J.Osbourne & T. Wall’s Nynswood Rozena, after having classes brimming over with quality and great numbers. Mr Lynn went on to find his Section b champion in Debbie Barr’s stallion, Carwood Goldfinch, with reserve going to Judy Hawkins’ Moelgarnedd Megan. Mr Lynn then moved on to judge the small part bred classes, before Mr Conti took over to judge the large part-breds, both judges joined together to gain their part bred champion in Mrs Jan Carmichael’s Fielden Cottontail, and reserve was Cathay Babey’s Royal Sovereign.

Mr Conti then moved on to judging the very strong classes of the Section C ponies, where he found his champion in N. Musson’s Popsters Tommy Cockles and reserve to Mr John Gary’s Brynithon Jupiter. The Welsh Section D’s were out in force at this early show, and the champion was found in Matt Attrell’s Danaway Sansom, with reserve going to William Wenham’s Montel Victrious Vikcy.

Both judges took a long time in the overall supreme Welsh inhand championship at the end of the day to agree on the Section A stallion Brynseion Cadivor taking the title over the section D stallion. Danaway Samson.

In the ridden ring, numbers too were up on other years!. Mrs Sue Phelan judged the novice L. Rein and First ridden Classes with Mrs G.M.A. Sells judging the Open classes, both judges together in the Mini Championship found their champion in Debbie Barr’s Rosemarche Ribbonwood ridden by Ellie Breach who won the Open first ridden class, with the reserve champion being the Novice Lead Rein class winner, Ysselvliedts Glamour boy owned by Mrs Mandy Burchell Small and ridden by Charlotte Davison.

Mrs Sue Phelan then moved on to judge our Welsh part bred ridden class with excellent entries this year! Her winner was a pony produced by team Ramsey, Beckcroft Best Man, owned by Mrs L Pearce and ridden by Chelsea Pearce, over 2nd placed pony, Deanshill Sweet Rapsody, owned by the Phillips family and ridden by H. Winshaw-Phillips.

Mrs Sells returned to the ring to judge the two new classes this year, the Pure Novice, for small and large breeds M&M. Mrs Phelan took over to judge the two Novice classes for these ponies and Mrs Sells returned to judge the Open classes. Both judges came together to agree on their overall ridden champion of the show, going to Lacarrow King, exhibited by Mrs Suzie Roberts and ridden by Sam Roberts who had won the Novice Large Breeds class, and reserve going to Tyreos Blue Fury, exhibited and ridden by Mrs. L. Barsoum who had won the Open large breeds class.

It was a first for SEWPCA to have the inhand classes’ finish after the ridden classes; especially given the number of ridden entries and to have so many spectators stay and watch the very last inhand overall championship was wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed our 1st show at Merriestwood, the first of many we hope! - although finding a date available takes some doing! Thanks go out to all competitors. Exhibitors and spectators for making this such an enjoyable day.
