Welsh Pony and Cob Society Performance Competition 2003 Presentations

At the Thistle Hotel, Cheltenham 7th December

Because 160 recipients were attending to collect their trophies and rosettes, the Annual Presentation had to be moved to the larger premises available at the Thistle Hotel, Cheltenham.

During the 32 years that the WPCS has operated the Performance Competition, although section D’s have twice been supreme points champions, this is the first time that they have captured the supreme and reserve positions.

Champion with 7315 points was the mare Raclog Mia Jess and reserve on 7060 points the stallion Curtismill Flyer. Mia Jess, who was reserve overall in 2002, ridden by her owner Tracey Robshaw of Huddersfield, won 5650 of her points as a working hunter with the remainder for dressage, cross-country, hunter trialling and show jumping. They started the year off well winning the Lee-Smith novice workers championship at the Ponies (UK) WinterChampionships and ended with the championship at the PUK Northern Master Championships. Curtismill Flyer is one of the very few grey section D’s in the Welsh Stud Book; his forte is dressage and he also won the veteran trophy.

Abbie Dark’s gelding Erwfair Milwr Bach was champion section A with 4275 points; he was bought unbroken at Llanybyther market for £200 and Abbie has done all the schooling herself. Amongst his variety of competitions was "fancy dress", appearing with Abbie turned out as an Indian at the Centenary Show.

The section B Morwyn Bronze Knight on 3590 points is the first ridden stallion ever to beat his mare and gelding counterparts and is well-known for his impeccable behaviour in mixed company; ridden by Sarah Challinor he has qualified for the NPS Baileys Ridden M&M Championships at Olympia at the end of the month.

The champion part-bred pony was Temmas Little Lancer ridden by Emma Jenkinson with 4260 points and they also collected the overall trophies for show ponies and show hunter ponies. The Sizmur family travelled from Aberdeen to collect the part-bred horse award with 5005 points for Mytice Minding Time who has won some important BSJA open competitions.

The Area Association team winners were the South Westeners with Leafycroft Rhys (A), Seaholm Dusk (B), Griffelyn of Jopa (C), Llanidan Prince (D) and Tollerhayes Fescue (PB).

Owing to generous sponsorship from Brightwells Auctioneers and Chris and Pat Gibbons of the Rhydspence Stud, prizemoney was awarded to the champions, bursaries to Angharad Harries, Poppy Hilton, Victoria Norton, Luke Gooding and Emily Greenwood and the Helen Forsyth Encouragement trophy went to Georgina and Edward Veale.

Further sponsorship came from the Julie Templeton Show Team and John and Maggie Carter of the Millcroft Stud to encourage breeders to keep geldings and most points were won by Lyn Wilson from Sheffield with her home-bred section B Walseker Leonardo and reserve by Lynda Cormack from Forth in Lanarkshire with the section A Waxwing Harlequin.
