National High Point Junior Gelding of the Year Award

There was keen competition this year not only in the individual sections but also for the overall title when two geldings were equal on points and the overall title had to be decided on number of first prizes won.

Taking the title was the three year old section B, Westfirle Alderman Ptolemy for Mrs Sally Potter, who hopes to bring him out in First Ridden classes with grandson Jack aboard. Bred by Mrs Debbie Barr, he is out of the Section A, Hollywell Leisa Ddu, and by Whisperdale Flamenco who was making a name for his self in 12hh WHP classes for the Barr family before his premature death.

The reserve champion, Crumpwell Blue-Dale, was spotted as a foal on the Autumn Hay Sale by Heather Lane and her daughter Rachel; now a two year old, they thought it a waste for him not to do something so decided to try him showing culminating in four wins at his last four shows.

The Scottish bred Cwmythan Easter Express was best of the Section C ponies for Angela Jamieson who travelled from Lanarkshire to receive her award; the attractively marked chestnut yearling by Glynwyn Gideon has been a consistent winner all season culminating with reserve championship at the Scottish All Welsh show.

Julie Price bought the section D winner, Ynysgerwyn Daniel, from his breeder Lynne Woodyatt as a yearling. Since then he has needed time to mature; by July this year he had developed from the gangly yearling into a very presentable three year old and from the six shows contested he returned home with five firsts and two championships. He is now backed and will have a quiet year as a four year old in preparation for the ridden classes the following year.

Eleven animals gained more than 100 points, clearly reflecting the growing popularity of the competition.
