The annual WPCS Performance Competition includes a special award for the pony or cob bought at a Brightwells sale, which has gained the highest number of points within the competition. In the 2008 competition it was Lady Forwood’s Large Welsh Part-bred, Pentaran Special Edition, which amassed the winning total of 1980 points to secure the prize of £100.

The following is the catalogue description at the 2004 Brightwells Spring Sale, from where he was purchased.

PENTARAN SPECIAL EDITION

2003 Bred by Mrs. C. A. Roberts – Bay Colt to make 16.2 hh approx

Sire: Hendrewen Deryn by Derwen Rosina’s Last
Dam: Another Chapter by Respect out of Taxi Freight by Restive

A well handled young horse. Super nature, prize winning siblings, will make a real middleweight, lovely walk and canter. Dam winning N.H. Mare. Sire many times supreme champion. Support real British breeding. Wormed regularly, loads, rugged and foot trimmed, very quiet to handle. Vaccinated.

Sir Peter and Lady Forwood saw him in the stables prior to the sale where two ladies were busy preparing and plaiting him for the ring amidst constant inspection by a large variety of prospective purchasers. He was obviously completely unmoved by the chaotic environment. Although physically very immature, he clearly promised size and scope. It was obvious he had inherited quality from his dam and his performance potential from his illustrious sire.

The description in the catalogue has proved to be very accurate. He was broken as a rising 3 year old by the (then aged over 80) owners, with a little help from 1 or 2 daughters. He always found walk and canter very easy, the trot took a little more time to establish. He also inherited a fair amount of pony brain, which made him easy to teach. Both owners use mobility vehicles, and ‘Eddie’ has to conform to the daily routine of being led from these vehicles.

He was lightly shown as a 4 year old, ending the season being Supreme Ridden Champion at the Welsh Performance Show at Brecon. He was taken hunting during the winter to further his education, together with some unaffiliated Show Jumping.

In 2008 he began by winning the Part-Bred section of the first NPS Dressage Finals held at Addington. This was a Prelim 7 Test and he was second in the Novice 27 Test. He completed 4 BE events (2 Intro & 2 Pre-Novice). He has competed in Ridden Part-Bred and Part-Bred WHP classes, rarely being beaten. He was also shown in Ridden Hunter and Working Hunter classes, doing very well. In the autumn he competed in BSJA Show Jumping, where he won a Discovery class. He ended 2008 by being placed 3rd overall Large Part-Bred in the Welsh Pony & Cob Performance Competition.

Special Edition is yet another example of the excellent choice and standard of ponies and cobs offered at the Brightwell Sales throughout the year.
