Message from the Chief Officer
1st December 2005

I walked into the WPCS Offices this morning to be met by a large snowman sitting next to reception. It is, of course, the week following the first Sunday in advent, and the office is gradually being overtaken by bright and cheerful decorations. For staff at the Welsh Pony and Cob Society the approach of the end of the year has been traditionally a least favoured time of year with individuals and teams working additional hours to try and shift the ever increasing piles of registrations. The mood in the office is different this year. We have real successes to be proud of and some excellent reasons for celebration.

We are currently processing registrations received in November 2005. This is a remarkable achievement considering that registrations received in November 2004 were still being processed in March 2005. We have been able to reach this point because of the commitment of staff to improve efficiency and provide a level of service that our members and other customers need. Weekly updates on the status of registrations will be posted on the Society’s homepage.

Another success was this last weekend’s Ridden Assessment in Hartpury. It was the first Ridden Assessment ever run by the Society. A great deal of thanks needs to be extended to the individuals who volunteered their time, ponies and cobs for the event, particularly given the difficult travelling conditions caused by the inclement weather and low temperatures. The riders, owners and grooms bore the chill of the school with enthusiasm and goodwill, providing an excellent assessment class.

A few weeks ago, on November 20th, I had the great pleasure of attending my first Area Associations Meeting in Plumley, Cheshire. The event was hosted by the North Western Association. Their hospitality and welcome was superb and much appreciated. It was, from my perspective, a positive and productive meeting and a good opportunity to meet individuals who do so much for the breed through their involvement with Area Associations.

The annual foal inspection is taking place in Brecon on the 3rd December. This scheme is funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board and is in recognition of the Welsh Hill Pony’s rare breed status. It will be the first time I have attended the inspection, another new experience and opportunity to learn more about the Hill Ponies and their importance as part of the vital heritage of the breed and the Welsh countryside. On Sunday, December 4th the Brightwells and Rhydspence performance awards will take place at the Thistle Hotel in Cheltenham. I am looking forward to the event as it is an opportunity to celebrate the performance success of the breed over the last 12 months. Again, for me, it is a good opportunity to meet many of the individuals who through their successes support the popularity and strength of Welsh Ponies, Cobs and Part-Breds.

This is a busy time of year for everyone and for the WPCS Head Office in particular. As members may recall from the Autumn Newsletter, the Society’s Business Plan is currently in development with consultation events being planned for the New Year. I am interested and keen to hear and receive the comments from all those who have an interest in the development of the WPCS. To this end the draft plan will be available in printed format and via this website. Council have agreed a timetable for the rollout of the plan to members and other stakeholders which aims for publication of the final draft in January 2006. The consultation events will then provide an opportunity for members to provide verbal feedback on the plans proposed.

As I have mentioned previously, registrations are being processed swiftly and I would urge all those who have not yet sent in applications for registration to do so as soon as possible. The offices will be closed from December 23rd until January 3rd 2006. If you have applications for 2005 please make sure that you post them to us by December 31st.

All that remains is to wish you the very best for the Season and warm wishes for 2006 from myself and the staff at the Welsh Pony & Cob Society.

Message from the Chief Officer

The autumn has reached us in Aberystwyth this week and it is with anticipation of busy times ahead that I write this most recent posting. Next week’s Horse of the Year Show is promising to be an exciting one for the Welsh breeds with a significant number of qualifiers this year. The achievement of these Welsh Ponies and Cobs underlines the excellence of the breed and highlights the dedication and passion of breeders across the UK. We wish all the HOYS qualifiers the best of luck next week.

We are, of course, in the midst of the sales season. The Fayre Oaks sale on the 24th and 25th of September was a great success with sales totalling over £400,000. Other sales are also doing well and we’re busy preparing for the Cob Sales in Builth Wells on the 14th, 15th and 16th of October. We are continually thankful and pleased with the co-operation and partnership with Brightwells Auctioneers with whom we work to ensure that transfers of ownership are completed on the day of sale for all the Society’s official sales.

Information regarding registrations and sales can be found by clicking here. We ask that applications are with us a minimum of 4 weeks before the sale date in order to guarantee that they are processed in time. This is due to the current volume and to the fact that many forms are sent to us with incorrect or incomplete information.

Should you have any questions about the Society’s work or the services we supply please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Details of how to do so can be found by clicking here.
Regards,
Gian

Press Statement - 3rd October 2005

The Council of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society has agreed to resolve its dispute with Mrs Dania Leyson and to readmit her as a member of the society.

January 2004, Mrs Leyson appeared before a Special Disciplinary Council Meeting to consider a complaint that she had accused the Society’s Finance Officer, Mr French of lying to the membership at the Annual General Meeting of the Society on 8th March 2003. The Special Disciplinary Council resolved to suspend her membership until she had apologised to Mr French.

Following a review of all aspects of the issue, the Council decided, on Friday 30th September, to unconditionally reinstate Mrs Leyson’s membership.

Commenting, WPCS Chief Officer Gian Fazey-Koven said, “The Welsh Pony and Cob Society is a large organisation. It has some 7000 members in the UK and as many overseas. In the interests of the greatest good for the greatest number, the Council has decided to draw a line under this unfortunate matter, settle its differences with Mrs Leyson and move on.”

Message from the Chief Officer

It is with great pleasure that I begin the first of regular postings to our website. I hope that over the months you will find this an additional way to gain insight into the workings of the Society and our activities.

With the Royal Welsh Show almost upon us I have been reflecting on my first 3 months in post. It has been a remarkable experience so far, and, as with any new job, much to learn. In early May I had the great pleasure of visiting the Glanusk Welsh Stallion show, my first as Chief Officer / Secretary of the Society. It confirmed my initial impressions that those who are involved with the breed have a clear and dedicated passion, it comes through in everything and is such a strength within the Society. This was followed by the May Sale on Saturday 14th May which was highly successful. It was the first time that we had needed to transfer passports on the day of the sale. Careful planning and co-operation between our Core Services Department and Brightwells Auctioneers ensured that we transferred ownership as they came in and enabled buyers to travel with correct documents. We will, in conjunction with Brightwells, be providing the same level of service to the Fayre Oaks and October Cob sales with transfers being processed during the sales.

The Stud Books are providing another source of good news at the moment. We have recently published Volume 80 (on sale at the Royal Welsh Show) which followed closely on the heels of Volume 79. We are committed to publishing Volumes 81 – 85 by summer 2006. This will put us in a strong position to publish stud books on an annual basis, something which I know will be welcomed by many.

On another publishing note we issued our first bilingual Junior Members Newsletter last week. By providing a newsletter in both English and Welsh we hope to appeal more widely to our future members and contribute to the development of life-long interest in the breed.

Processing and issuing of passports is a keen area of interest to the Society, its members and others who own ponies and cobs registered with us. I am pleased to say that by the end of this month we will be processing passports as they come in. We are committed to reviewing and developing our systems and to ensure that we work towards improving our service delivery to all those who use the services we offer.

And so to finish this short message where I began, with the Royal Welsh Show. I am anticipating an exciting four days, with many people to meet and many new experiences through my role as Chief Officer / Secretary. I hope that you will take the time to visit our Pavilion office and, if you are a member, make the most of the facilities on offer. I will be on the showground every day and look forward to meeting you.
Best wishes,

Gian

Chief Officer

The Welsh Pony and Cob Society are pleased to announce the appointment of their new Chief Officer, Gian Fazey-Koven. Originally from Tregarth, North Wales, Gian is a graduate of the University of Warwick. Following graduation in 1994 she emigrated to Newfoundland, Canada where she pursued a career in theatre production management and arts management, holding senior management positions in the theatre and the music industries. She has worked in the charitable and voluntary sectors since her return to Wales in 1999. In 2002 she joined Citizens Advice, the national organisation for Citizens Advice Bureaux, where she held the post of Business Management Consultant.

“It is both a pleasure and a privilege to be taking up the post of Chief Officer of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society. The society has a well-established, and well deserved, reputation as the largest and most successful of the British native breed societies, both nationally and internationally. I look forward to being a part of the continued development of that reputation; to working with the staff and members in furthering the aims of the society; and to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Miss Philipson-Stow, Chairman of Council, commented:
“We are delighted to have appointed such an outstanding candidate and we look forward to many years with Gian leading the Society’s administrative team.”

WELSH PONY AND COB SOCIETY JUDGES CONFERENCE

128 members of the Judges Panel of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society attended the first ever Judges Conference held at the Royal Welsh showground on 19th March. The objectives of the Conference included sharing ideas among fellow judges, understanding the task of judging and promoting the uniformity of judging.

The first guest speaker was Mrs Davina Whiteman who drew on her wealth of experience and warned judges from placing animals whose temperament and constitution dictated that their successes could only be shortlived. The second speaker, veterinarian Charles Frank who, with his wife Wendy, run the very successful Sunwillow Welsh pony stud, guided the members through correct conformation and predicted various unsoundness which would otherwise result.

The members were then divided into groups and the topics discussed included unruly or fat exhibits, discourteous exhibitors, interfering stewards and the maximum amount of white markings tolerated. There was an obvious dearth of young judges and ways of encouraging them were invited.

All members were of the opinion that this was a very worthwhile and educational exercise and were greatly indebted to the Judges Administration Board for all the hard work involved in staging it.

REPORT OF THE PUBLICITY OFFICER

We have continued with the success of putting reports on the WPCS web-site; these can be passed direct to Overseas Societies, many of which publish them in their periodicals. The 2004 reports include the AGM (5 photographs), Performance Competition Presentation, Glanusk Show (10 photos), Brightwells Spring Sale ( 8 photos), Northleach Show (7 photos), Young Judges Competition (2 photos), Fayre Oaks & Polaris Sales (11 photos), Royal Welsh Sale (9 photos), Royal Welsh Winter Fair (10 photos). In addition the Office has supplied up-dates for the web-site including Welfare Liaison Meeting, Hill Pony Societies Meetings, Passports etc.

Various organisations/publications have also been supplied with reports of the major events/successes of 2004. These include the Fayre Oaks Sale where the total figure was £339,341 (up from £143,465 in 2001) with an average of £824 (up from £419 in 2001 and £21 in 1954) and the Royal Welsh Sale with a total of £620,128 (up from £358,938 in 2001) and, for the first time ever, a four-figure average (£1,071) compared with £719 in 2001, £188 at the first RW Sale in 1977 and £104 at the first Llanarth Sale in 1964 (Sale total = £3,744).

The Welsh breeds fared well at the Horse of the Year Show 6 – 10 October starting with Waitwith Connie (A) M&M mini champion ridden by Emily Skuse (lead rein winner where 17 of the 22 qualifiers including the top 8 were Welsh), with Foxtrot Gemma (first ridden) reserve ridden by Megan Cookson. The section D stallion Penstrumbly Sad Max Johnny ridden by Vickie Hesford was reserve M&M ridden champion and the section B stallion Northlight Galliano ridden by Danielle Waterhouse won his class and was later (20th December) overall reserve ridden M&M champion from 34 qualifiers of all native breeds at the NPS/Baileys championships at Olympia. The section D mare Cathael Bay Girl ridden by Jill Wormall was HOYS reserve champion M&M WHP after winning the over-138 cm division; 12 out of the 17 qualifiers (122 cm) and 10 of the 16 qualifiers (138 cm) were Welsh. The WPB gelding Colbeach Salaman ridden by Samantha Dent was 128 cm open ridden winner and Show Pony Of The Year and the 138 cm WPB mare Broadgrove Chatterbox (HOYS Cuddy In-hand champion in 2003) ridden by Lucy Loughton was reserve champion; Chatterbox was also RIHS show pony champion and overall supreme at the BSPS Summer Championships. The WPB Harver Relativity (first ridden) ridden by Alice Greenwood was HOYS open mini champion and another WPB Nantcol Sylphide (lead rein) ridden by Charlotte Dent was reserve mini champion. Finally the palomino section B gelding Wharley Pageboy was Driving Pony Of The Year for his owner, Nicola Bladin from Jersey. Buddy Bunn, winer of the Hickstead Jumping Derby is 25% section D; an offer of £500,000 for him has been refused.

The 2005 Calendar made a nice surplus; thanks to members and Area Associations who sold/ bought them. There are still many prominent WPCS members who seem unaware that the Publicity Committee has produced colour Calendars for 27 years (and black & white prior to this!). Our Patron Her Majesty The Queen wrote another very nice “thank you” letter for her Calendar adding how much she enjoyed watching the judging of the Welsh Pony and Cob classes at the 2004 Royal Welsh Show. Many thanks to the WPCS staff who have manned the WPCS Publicity Vehicle often under difficult conditions. WPCS publications still continue to sell consistently; there are very few “One Hundred Glorious Years” books left, there will never be any more so secure copies for your children/grandchildren now while stocks last. Members will be notified of the availability of the next book “The Welsh Pony” (sections A, B, C, Welsh part-bred ponies and Performance) (J A Allen), the sister volume to “The Welsh Cob”, on the WPCS web-site.

All members of the Publicity Committee put in an enormous amount of work and without them, it would be impossible for me to carry on and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all. David Blair succeeded in getting the 2005 Journal out by the deadline date of 5th January despite a two weeks delay in getting the information out to the members. This meant working day and night and he is to be congratulated for a magnificent publication, reaching 800 pages for the first time ever, almost 10 times the first issue in 1962. Kathleen James spends months checking the figures in the Performance competition, assisted by David Jones (who is in charge of trophies) and Richard Miller (geldings). Many thanks also to sponsors of prizes for this competition and bursaries for our young competitors. Again thanks to Laura Hutchins for organising the Christmas cards which annually provide a nice surplus and to Sue and Janet Hardy for collating the sire points at the Royal Welsh Show.

WELSH PONY AND COB SOCIETY AGM, THE TOWN HALL, CHELTENHAM, 6th March 2004.

Fears that the Annual General Meeting of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society held at the Cheltenham Town Hall on 6th March would prove to be turbulent after some members had expressed dissatisfaction with the running of the Society proved to be unfounded and the meeting turned out to be one of the most constructive ever. The exceptionally satisfactory financial situation put members in a contented mood and the hope was expressed by the President, Miss Laura Hutchins of the Bengad Stud, Dursley, Gloucestershire that members would now build upon this success for the furtherance of the breeds.

The chairman, Miss Rosemary Philipson-Stow of the Pendock Stud, Malvern reported 839 new members enrolled during 2003, registrations at 8,291 were the highest since 1995, transfers stood at 8,430 up from 6,600 in 2002 and exports kept up well at 355 led by Holland (56), Sweden (46), France (44), Germany (43) and the USA (35). The 9 exported to New Zealand were the highest ever in one year to that country.

Honorary Life-memberships were conferred upon the late Mrs Eileen Burrough (The Hale Stud, Lewes, East Sussex), Mr Herman Schmitt (Palatinate Stud, Germany) and Mr John Thomas (Gwendraeth Stud, Kidwelly, Carmarthen).

The sire rating trophies were presented to Pendock Legend (section A), Carwed Charmer (B), Nebo Bouncer (C) and Thorneyside Flyer (D); the Performance sire rating trophies to Weston Bestman (A), Rotherwood Prince Regent (B), Winchfawr Anzac (Working Hunter Pony), Synod Ranger (FEI driving) and Trevallion Prince Comet (harness); the Llanarth Braint Memorial trophy (best ridden section D at Olympia) to Thorneyside The Toff and the Royal Welsh ridden gelding awards to Whitsand Warrior (A), Mynach Moonwalk (B), Synod Rosser (C) and Cwmtawe Kinsey (D). The Debbie Dunbar painting of a Royal Welsh Show champion this time went to section A and the delighted recipient was twelve-year-old Will Perrins, handler of Springbourne Elly who was section champion in 2003 from 632 entries. Mr Emrys Bowen, Cennen Stud, Ammanford who has been Honorary veterinary surgeon to the Society for twenty years was presented with the Brodrick Memorial trophy. The Young Ambassador-Elect Miss Danielle Morgan of Bridgend was introduced to the members.

He also thanked members who had organised the Society Performance competition and Presentation and ridden Displays at Shows. The full report given by the Publicity Officer at the AGM is available HERE.

Votes of thanks to the retiring President Miss Laura Hutchins were given by Mrs Chris Hopcraft (Homeshill Stud, Somerset) and Mrs Gladys Dale (Scole Stud, East Lothian). Society Logo

It has come to the attention of the Society that a number of members are using the Society's official Logo, either in their stud advertisements or on their vehicles, headed paper, etc.

The Society's logo is an official registered Trade Mark and we would therefore ask members not to use this, or anything confusingly similar, unless they have had the permission of the Society's Council. We would respectfully ask those members who are using the Society's logo to discontinue doing so.

Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Welfare Liason Meeting.

On Sunday 18th January The Welsh Pony and Cob Society’s Welfare Officer Mr. Alan Pearce arranged a meeting in Brecon with the President Elect Mrs Anne Vestey, Mr. Colin Thomas from the Hill Pony Improvement Societies and Council Members Mrs.Marie-Clare Nimmo and Mr. Tom Roberts.
The Meeting was very constructive and worthwhile with welfare and illegal grazing as the main topics discussed. The Meeting finally closed just before midnight and we all felt that the evening was very positive. It is hoped in future that we can meet regularly and visit hot spots to monitor events, exchange ideas and work together for the benefit of our Members and their ponies.

PRESS RELEASE.

The Council of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society deeply regret that it has been necessary to hold Special Disciplinary Council meetings into the behaviour of 5 Council members. After hearing facts and receiving letters from those persons the Council found that Mr. J.G. Berry, Mrs. E. French, Mr. G.W. Jones, Mr. I.J.R. Lloyd and Mr. T.J. Roberts all acted prejudicial to the interests of the Society by, on their own admission, visiting solicitors acting for the then suspended Secretary of the Society in contravention of a decision taken previously by Council, in their presence. Council agreed that they should be reprimanded and warned about their future behaviour.

The Welsh Pony and Cob Society found that this was in breach of their duties as Directors and Trustees of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society which is both a limited company and a charity.

SPECIAL DISCIPLINARY COUNCIL MEETINGS

Mrs. A. Corrigan
The Society's Special Disciplinary Council met on Monday, 11th August 2003 to consider disciplinary matters relating to Mrs. A. Corrigan, Corran Stud, Hinds Lane, Radcliffe, Manchester in that she

1. Put into disrepute the Society, its unaffiliated Lancashire Association and its Members in general by posting on the web-site: www.microponies.co.uk the following comments: "come on Council, lets get rid of the real rats!!!"

2. Conducted herself inappropriately at the Annual General Meeting of The Lancashire Welsh Pony and Cob Association on 25th January 2003

3. Inaccurately and misleadingly circulated a letter and Petition to all area Association Chairs in her official capacity as Secretary of The Lancashire Welsh Pony and Cob Association without approval of the Members of the said Association and without the express authority or knowledge of Council Member Mr Ifor Lloyd mentioned therein.

The Special Disciplinary Council resolved that as from 11th August, 2003 Mrs. A. Corrigan would be expelled from membership of the Society for an indefinite period."

Mr. D.T. Davies
A Special Disciplinary Council Meeting was held on 6th October, 2003 to consider whether Mr. D.T. Davies, Camlas, 3 Pont y Cob Road, Gowerton, Swansea circulated Motions to Members of the Society for the Annual General Meeting held on 8th March, 2003 and the costs incurred (which were authorised by him at that time in his capacity as President) was inappropriate.

Mr. D.T. Davies was issued with a reprimand.

Mrs. D. Leyson
The Council of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society wishes to report that it has been necessary to hold a Special Disciplinary Council Meeting regarding a written allegation made by Mrs. D. Leyson, Cwmdulais Cottages, Off Goppa Road, Pontardulais, Swansea accusing the Society's Finance Officer, Mr. G French of lying at the Annual General Meeting held in March 2003 in answer to Mr. I.J.R. Lloyd's questions.

After hearing the facts and listening to a tape recording of the said Annual General Meeting, Council found that Mrs. Leyson's allegation was unsubstantiated.

Council unanimously resolved that Mrs. Leyson's membership of the Society be suspended forthwith until such time that she withdraws the allegation and apologises unreservedly to Mr. French, and in writing.

An announcement will be made once the recruitment process has been concluded. Penwayn Ryan HOYS Champion 2003

After five days of competition at the Horse of the Year Show held at the NEC Arena, Birmingham from 17 to 21 September, all the champions travel back on the Sunday evening for the Supreme Pony of the Year championship.

The supreme champion this year was the nine-year-old chestnut Welsh mountain pony gelding Penwayn Ryan, owned by Mrs Tracey Collett of Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire, and ridden by her 14-year-old daughter, Laura.

Penwayn Ryan was bred by the Watkins family of Pengenffordd, Talgarth, Brecon, and was sired by Moorcock Halcyon, who was a Welsh Pony and Cob Society premium stallion running out on the Breconshire Black mountains. Ryan was later gelded and spent his time being ridden around the farm on a halter until the Watkins grand-children outgrew him and he was offered for sale at last October's Brecon Sale. At the Sale, Ryan was "spotted" by local enthusiast Ricky Perry who appreciated his potential, bought him for £140 and sent him on to the Collett family. From the outset it was obvious that Ryan had enormous potential, and he has had a brilliant competition season, including winning the £1,000 supreme championship at the Ponies (UK) championships at Peterborough in August.

Ryan was also overall champion at the Welsh Pony and Cob Performance Show held at Felin Newydd, Llandefalle, Brecon on 13 and 14 September, where he won the ridden class, also first for working hunter and show jumping and second for dressage and hunter trials. This was the fourth successive time for Laura to win the overall championship at the Performance Show, having won previously on Bockmer Winston, Baverstock Talissa and Glenwood Caradog, the last of which won the second prize at the HOYS on Wednesday.

Laminitis Warning

The National Equine Welfare Council have issued this laminitis warning:

Owners of horses and ponies of all sizes are warned to monitor their animals carefully for laminitis in the weeks to come. The current spell of warm dry weather is likely to end in rain which will promote a late flush of grass growth in paddocks and fields all over the country. This will mimic the grass growth that commonly occurs in spring. This grass will be very rich and owners are warned to watch out for early signs of laminitis, which can occur when horses and ponies receive a sudden diet of lush grass.

Laminitis is a disease that affects the sensitive tissues called laminae which are sandwiched between the bone and the hoof in the horses foot and can lead to acute and sudden lameness. Early signs are a reluctance to move, especially on hard ground, and a tendency to rock back on the heels. Horses and ponies which go untreated are in severe pain and the disease can lead to death if not correctly treated in the early stages. Owners should contact their veterinary surgeon if they are concerned that their horse may be showing signs of laminitis.

More information can be obtained from the Laminitis Trust: www.laminitis.org.

2003 Annual General Meeting Reports

REPORT OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE WELSH PONY AND COB SOCIETY HELD AT THE PAVILION, LLANDRINDOD WELLS, SATURDAY 8th MARCH 2003.

From the Publicity Officer. Official WPCS Minutes will be issued later.

There were approximately 250 members present at the Pavilion, Llandrindod Wells for the September 2001 AGM, however with seven additional notices of motion submitted after the original agendas for the March 2003 Meeting had been distributed to the members, it soon became apparent that the 565 seats at the Pavilion would be insufficient and an overflow basement room with accommodation for another 300 or so was organised with sound and video facilities. Voting figures showed that over 800 members were present.

The WPCS President, Mr Dai Davies, (Glanrannell) presided over the Meeting and the minutes of the Meeting of 9th May 2002 were confirmed. Mr Paul Wilding-Davies (Fayre) led the members through the Audited Balance Sheet and Accounts for the year ended 30th September 2002 but because the Balance Sheet for the Centenary Show had not been finalised on 30th Sept (but has now been finalised), 61 members voted against acceptance, 199 abstained but over 500 members voted in favour of accepting the Balance Sheet as presented. With the FTSE having dropped from 4903 to 3721 during the year, the WPCS Investments had kept up remarkably well and the transactions for the year had resulted in a substantial surplus of £32,788. Various items which contributed towards this surplus included the Centenary Show, the book One Hundred Glorious Years (£22,350 since July 2001), an additional donation from Brightwells Auctioneers as a result of the best Fayre Oaks and Royal Welsh Sales ever (this money will be earmarked to benefit our younger members) and the resurrection of the HBLB grant for feral ponies (which had been discontinued in 2000). WPCS Trading Ltd had also experienced a successful year and the accounts were presented by Mr Brian Foster (Gerrig).

Honorary Life Memberships were conferred upon Mr Roy Davies (Tregare), Mrs Desda Hone (Wyedean), Mrs Patsy Egerton (Treharne), Mrs Jean Houghton (Sinton), Mr John Jones (Nantdywyll), Mrs Jan Pearce (Glyncoch), Mr Ifor Williams (Randan) and Mr Walter Willoughby Williams (Arvon). Lady Evans-Bevan(Bronllys), Mrs Evelyn Charlton (Kiltinane), Mrs Mary Edwards (Cascob) and Mr Gwil Evans (Dyfrdwy) were elected Honorary Life Vice-Presidents. The Brodrick Memorial trophy was presented to Lady Creswick of the Nattai Stud, Australia for a lifetime's devotion to the Welsh breeds; her father the late Mr Anthony Hordern purchased the section A stallion Greylight for £1,000 in 1911 and Lady Creswick imported many famous stallions from Britain in the intervening years including Coed Coch Bari for £22,050 in 1978. The Llanarth Braint trophy for the highest placed ridden Welsh Cob at Olympia was presented for the second successive year to Murrayhall Faith's Reward. Sire rating trophies were presented to Springbourne Caraway (A), Eyarth Rio (B), Nebo Bouncer (C) and Ebbw Victor (who died three weeks ago) (D). The Miss Wheatcroft spoons to the highest placed ridden geldings at the Royal Welsh Show were presented to Tallares Sandpiper (A), Gryngallt Perseus (B) and Cwmtawe Kinsey (D). Debbie Dunbar presents an oil painting of a Royal Welsh Show champion every year and this time the lucky recipients were Meirion and Dianne Evans owners/breeders of Gwynfaes Culhwch. Society presentations were made to Mr Emrys Bowen (Cennen) who was retiring as the Society's Honorary Veterinary Officer, Dr Wynne Davies (Ceulan) who was retiring as Editor of the Journal and Mrs Gladys Dale (Scole) who was retiring after serving for many years on Council. Finally the Brightwells Sale Champagne Moment awards were presented to Mrs Carol Jones (Weston) (Fayre Oaks Sale), Cathy Pearse (Uphill) (Royal Welsh Sale) and Dr Wynne Davies (Brightwells Special award). Adrian Bowen (Glyncoch) was installed as the Young Ambassador for 2003.

The Chairman of Council Miss Rosemary Philipson Stow (Pendock) reported a very successful year with 6570 animals registered (2217 section A, 911B, 773C, 1983D and 686 Welsh part-breds), 6600 transfers of ownership, 398 stallions issued with licences and 384 exported with the 58 exported to the USA being the highest figure for 44 years. 746 new members were enrolled bringing the total to 7543.

The Publicity Officer, Dr Wynne Davies reported that the Welsh Breeds had enjoyed exceptional successes during 2002. Entry numbers at the Royal Welsh Show had reached such unmanageable figures (e.g. 69 section A yearling fillies,67 barren mares, 78 foals, 46 section C stallions, 63 section D yearling fillies and 67 section D barren mares) that sections B and C now have had to be split over two days: Tuesday: B juniors + C seniors; Wednesday: B seniors + C juniors. At the Horse of the Year Show 21 of the 23 M+M lead-rein qualifiers were Welsh with Bryndefaid Patsy mini-champion and Roseisle Tudyr Melody reserve champion, Gryngallt Playsome (B) was M+M Working Hunter champion, Oldcourt Balalaika (WPB) was Riding Pony of the Year and also supreme champion at the Ponies (UK) championships from 3,500 animals and over 15,000 entries. Also at Ponies(UK) Frongoch Cardi (A) was Glyn Greenwood supreme champion and Cwmpennant Tywysoges (C) won the Cavendish Supreme £1,000. Stambrook Pavaroti (WPB) was the first Working Hunter Pony ever to be supreme champion at the BSPS Championships. At the Ridden Championships at Olympia 16 of the 31 qualifiers were Welsh (3A, 4B, 2C + 7D) and 7 of the top 12 were Welsh with Glenwood Caradog (A) 2nd, Glynwyn Pennies from Heaven (C) 4th and Murrayhall Faith's Reward (D) was 8th.

Votes of thanks to the retiring President Mr Dai Davies were proposed by Mr Steve Everitt (Tireve) and seconded by Mr Nigel Burton (Pentrefelin). Miss Laura Hutchins (Bengad) was installed as President for 2003 with Mrs Ann Vestey (Kentchurch) as President-Elect. As a result of postal ballot where 1536 members voted, the following were elected to serve on Council for 2003–2006: Mr Eric Davies (Maesmynach), Mr Gwil Evans (Dyfrdwy), Mrs Betty French (Forlan), Mr Arwyn Jones (Glanvyrnwy), Mrs Doreen Jones (Synod), Mr Gwyn Jones (Fronarth), Mrs Alison Mountain (Twyford), Mr Tom Roberts (Pistyll), Mr John Russell (Gartconnel), Miss Joanna Sheil (Dukeshill), and Mrs Diana Thomas (Dyfed).

On the advice of the Society's solicitor who was present at the Meeting, discussion on the additional seven proposals (which included a vote of no confidence in the Council) was allowed but no voting could take place.

WPCS AGM item 11: Report of the Publicity Officer

Introduction: Owing to the recent adverse publicity, I issued the statement of 11 points on 23rd January (available on WPCS web site) quoting the Official financial statement from the Society's Auditors that the WPCS is in a very sound financial position resulting in a surplus of £32,788 for the year ended Sept 2002. This excellent result has benefited from the Centenary Show (item 2), WD books (item 3), Brightwells Sales (items 5 + 6), HBLB annual award of £5,200 (item 10). I will now elaborate on the 11 points:

1. RW Show, the Welsh Breed classes have been so successful that sections B and C now also have to be split over two days: Tues: B juniors + C seniors; Weds: B seniors + C juniors.

2. Cent Show: these were the most fantastic two days in the history of the WPCS. It is sad that the member who expended so much energy and wasted so much time in this AGM querying a few pounds in the final surplus figures of an enormous £10,000 could not have diverted her energy into helping at the Show. The exact figures are now available but were not available on 30th Sept. The Publicity Officer wishes to have on record the enormous debt which we owe to Mrs Mills (Chairman of the Cent Show), Mrs Doreen Jones, Len Bigley and Wynne Davies, David Jones (secretary), Fiona Leadbitter (Sponsorship secretary), Tom Best (functions organiser) and a whole host of willing volunteers, sponsors, helpers etc etc.

3. About 1,800 books One Hundred Glorious Years have been sold up to Christmas 2002 resulting in excess of takings minus all costs (including £3,000 expenses to WD to cover 10 years typing, all postages, telephones, photographs etc) of £22,350. It has been suggested that every member lends £50 to enable the WPCS to build new premises. While this is admirable, the loan will eventually have to be paid back. Is it not more beneficial to the WPCS that every member present buys another book resulting in another £30,000 to the WPCS without any extra outlay? The remaining 1,200 books are in storage and there will never be any more available. These books will soon be collectors items and exceptionally valuable, one signed copy sold for $500 in the USA. Several Wynne Davies books for J A Allen (now Robert Hale) have sold 10,000 copies and the next one due out in early 2004 will be the BEST OF THEM ALL! Also the 2004 WPCS Calendars are available at this Meeting. The Trading Co figures on all nine WD books show a surplus of over £40,000 for the WPCS already. When one considers this figure + the contribution from Mrs Mills and others members of Council one wonders why there is a notice of motion "a vote of no confidence in the present Council and that each member resigns ipso facto"? I don't begrudge writing OHGY without royalties for the WPCS; The WPCS has done much more for me in 55 years than I will ever be able to repay to the WPCS.

4. The 2003 Journal got off to a bad start through the August Newsletter not appearing until 24th Sept. However with day and night working on the part of the Editor, Ruth and Cambrian Printers we gained the lost 6 weeks and were on target for printing on 9th Dec but were instructed to forego the printing to await a statement. The Editor did not believe that the Journal was the place for statements and was not prepared to delay the Journal after the next available printing (5th Jan) and went ahead and the Journals were delivered on 22nd Jan, only two weeks later than previous. The Editor wishes his successor all the best. For any errors in the 2003 Journal as a result of the rush, complications on Photographers copyrights (one copyright cost the WPCS £280 + VAT in 2002), I accept full responsibility and thank the various people who have helped over 12 years (e.g. prizewinners photos selection committee).

5. Sales: The Fayre Oaks(on the new site) and

6. RW Sales were the best ever and the auctioneers donated another substantial amount in view of the unprecedented turnover. This donation will be directed towards our younger members. Copies of Overseas publications e.g. Australian Action Autumn 2003 were held up for members to see how Overseas Societies appreciate reports and photos of Sales, Centenary Show, Performance Shows + competition etc

7. Without question Welsh ponies and Cobs are the best in the world (even if all the best have Ceulan grandmothers!!). For this we are indebted to our grandfathers e.g. my grandfathers uncle bred Klondyke in 1894 and I can trace the breeding of every female at Ceulan back to him. Grandfathers of other members include Ifor Lloyd, John Roderick Rees, Dafydd Harris, Sam Morgan etc. No wonder we had such success at the Horse of the Year Show, Olympia etc. The current organiser of the Performance Competition is Kathleen James who spends many months with the calculator checking the points. Many thanks and this competition goes from strength to strength with the location of the Presentation becoming too small and having to be moved to larger premises. This is the 32nd Presentation for me to compere, all over the UK, at my own expense. It is interesting that for the brilliant little riders who receive their trophies nowadays, when I started in 1971, I was presenting the trophies to their mothers (or their grandmothers!!)

8. Various sections of the Office have been re-organised to facilitate registrations etc and 2002 applications have now all been processed.

11. 2004 Calendar available today.

Finally: the WPCS has had "thunder and lightning" in the past. In 1932 there was no money in the kitty to pay Captain Howson's(the secretary) wages and he was told that he might get paid in 1933 if funds improved. In 1961 the WPCS was made bankrupt in High Court but Council members (alive today: Miss Saunders Davies, Mr Gwyn Price, and present today: Mrs Mountain, David Reynolds + Wynne Davies) chipped in some funds and the WPCS has blossomed ever since to become the GREATEST BREED SOCIETY IN THE WORLD.

I am the eternal optimist and think today must be the watershed meeting. We must heed the words of Mr Ifor Lloyd which have appeared four times on TV recently.

"There is no time for us to argue amongst one another. Let us compete against one another while in the showring but the moment we are outside, let us all work together".

New Awards for Geldings From WPCS

In offering these free Overall Gelding Championship Rosettes, generously sponsored by the Millcroft Stud, we hope to encourage the possibilities for showing geldings in-hand, therefore creating a market for our often unwanted colt foals and enabling the creation of a network of potential performance prospects to represent the best Native breed in the World at the highest levels.

If you organise an affiliated Welsh Pony and Cob Society Show and are prepared to add to your schedule —

"Welsh Pony and Cob Society Gelding Incentive Scheme — Overall Gelding Championship from the highest placed geldings in each appropriate class within Sections A, B, C and D, generously sponsored by the Millcroft Stud"

Please sign up for these free rosettes that will be sent to you for presentation on show day. Why not stage a specific "Gelding, 3 years and under" class for each Section to encourage gelding exhibitors even more, giving them a greater chance of winning a red rosette?

Running alongside this scheme is the title of National High Point Junior Gelding of the Year, open to all geldings three years of age and under, shown in hand, with points gained throughout the year with the overall winner having the option to undergo two weeks training and evaluation with the Julie Templeton Show Team.

National High Point Junior Gelding of the Year

Sponsored by the Julie Templeton show team together with www.heniarth.com, a new scheme is launched in 2003 to encourage the showing of young geldings in-hand, in an attempt to:

  • Create a market for many unwanted colt foals
  • Value the potential in the young gelding
  • Create a "nursery" for the performance stars of tomorrow
  • Strengthen the breed base of potential performance animals for purchasers coming from other breeds
  • Encourage new members to the breed

1. The competition is open to all registered geldings, three years old and under, from Sections A, B, C and D that are shown in-hand.

2. Free points cards are available for completion of each animal's results by the owner, with signatures gained to verify the placings.

3. Points can be gained at any show with added points for classes at WPCS Area Association Shows.

4. The results will be announced at the presentation of the WPCS Performance Awards in December, with place rosettes and trophies given in each Section.

5. The overall champion, if and/or when it reaches the age of three/four years, has the option to undergo two weeks of training and evaluation with the Julie Templeton Show Team, leading producers of ridden ponies.

The Early Years

The new WPCS book The Early Years contains reproductions of articles taken from the Society's early stud books (volumes 1–15), and is available from the WPCS Office, price £20.00 plus carriage of £5 for UK, £6 for the rest of Europe. (Contact the Office for other countries.)

The Early Years - front cover

From the back cover: "The articles reproduced here give a fascinating insight into the way our Society started and the problems that those pioneers faced. The reader will soon discover what a debt we owe to those present at the birth of our wonderful Society. They will realise the commitment that our forebears made to the Ponies and Cobs that were so much a part of their lives. I hope that this volume will go some way to saluting those to whom we owe that debt and that the next hundred years will be as fruitful as our first century."

Highlights of the 52 articles (nearly 500 pages) include:

  • Minutes of the first Annual Meeting in 1902
  • Relation of the Welsh pony to the polo and riding pony
  • On clearing the hills
  • The national value of the Welsh pony
  • Improving the breeds of New Forest ponies
  • Welsh mountain ponies of today [1908]
  • Some events of the year 1912
  • Future of the Welsh pony
  • Three celebrated Welsh ponies
  • The Welsh Cob for military purposes

Here is a short excerpt from "The Welsh Cob for military purposes":

When war broke out last year [1914] and it was announced that all suitable horses and cobs would be taken over by the Government for Military Purposes there was great consternation throughout Wales. Owners and breeders of the old type of Welsh Cob were in despair, as they had hoped that by means of the Premium Cob Stallions which had been travelling through the counties of Wales they would have been able to revive the glory of the breed. Many of the best judges in the Welsh Pony and Cob Society were appointed buyers by the War Office authorities, and right well they did their work. Fair prices were paid for good animals, but nothing could really compensate the farmers for the loss of their favourites.

In some instances an endeavour was made to hide cobs and mares, but all to no purpose.

As a result the regiments of Yeomanry marched out of their Depots with a splendid lot of Welsh Cobs, most of them mares which could ill be spared.

Record Prices at £500,000 Welsh Sale

A four-year old Welsh Section C stallion made the record breaking price of £14,500 at Brightwells Royal Welsh Sale. Overall sales of Welsh ponies and cobs totalled nearly half a million pounds.

The four-year old Welsh Section C Stallion, Uphill Tom Thumb, created a record at Brightwells Royal Welsh Sale when he sold on the second day for £14,500. Tom Thumb, who has no show ring experience but staghunted with his Okehampton based owner, Cathy Pearse, was offered at a reserve of £2,000, and was bought by St Clears based Alan Pearce for an overseas client.

Dave and Cathy Pearse bought Tom Thumb's dam, Balimou Bizzy Lizzie, for £100 and paid £200 for his sire, Windwillow Viscount, who has now been sold on.

Overall sales were encouraging, with 163 of the 216 animals offered the first day selling for an average of £705. The Part-Breds and geldings averaged £1,273, almost £400 up on last year. More than 40 lots went to overseas buyers. In total, 533 animals were sold for £485,979. The average price was equal to the highest average ever (£911 in 1990) and the 84% sold is the highest figure over the 38 years of these Sales.

Performance animals were in demand at the sale, where the top gelding figure of £6,500 — almost double the previous record price for a gelding — was paid for Lady Forwood's six-year-old Section D, Mowcastle More Magic.

More Magic, whom Lady Forwood bought at this sale as a yearling for £700, was broken in by her husband, 77-year-old Sir Peter Forwood, and has been ridden to many successes this year by their daughter, Jane Weller.

Among their achievements in 2002 were winning the ridden gelding class at the Royal Welsh Show, the open class at the P(UK) Winter Championships, and the Woodhouse M&M Championship and Dressage competition at the NPS Championships.

Included in the prize for the latter were dressage lessons with Carl Hester, which will be taken up by More Magic's new owner, Anna Ernsting of Ross-on-Wye.

The top young Cob was Jones Brothers and Gwyn and Nicola Jones's two-year-old colt, Fronarth Telynor-yr-Ail. He was bought for £6,200 by Ann Daunt, of the Maestir Stud, Melton Mowbray, and will later be gelded as a riding horse for her granddaughter.

The Synod Stud's Section C consignment of one colt and seven filly foals fetched £22,824, averaging £2,853 each.

Welsh Breeds at the Royal Welsh Show
(22–25 July 2002)

There were 1690 entries in the in-hand Welsh sections at the Royal Welsh show, plus 305 under saddle, 53 in harness, 56 Welsh part-breds in hand — plus many more in the palomino, riding pony breeding, private driving and trekking classes. Examples of class entries are 78 Section A foals, 46 Section C stallions and 67 Section D barren mares.

From a total of 3179 horse and pony entries, the HOYS Cuddy Breeders' qualifier, judged by Mrs Cynthia Higgon, was the Welsh Section B mare Eyarth Windflower, with the Welsh cob stallion Gwynfaes Culhwch reserve. Owing to a connection between the owners and the judge, it will be Culhwch who will represent the Royal Welsh at the Horse Of The Year Show. Windflower is still only five years old, has her first foal at foot and won at the Royal Welsh Show for the third time. Reserve Section B champion was the chestnut stallion Carwed Charmer, who is one of the five animals featured on Phillipa Porley's recently issued print The Pride of Wales. Four of the nine finalists in the Section B championship were palominos, including the reserve male champion, the yearling Wedderlie Mardi Gras.

The Section D champion, Gwynfaes Culhwch, is also only five years old, and one of the youngest ever to have his name engraved on the coveted George Prince of Wales cup since it was presented in 1908. Culhwch is a very promising youngster and his progeny have already commanded top prices at sales. The reserve cob champion was the seven year old mare Fronarth Model Lady, whose illustrious dam, Fronarth Welsh Model, was twice female champion before she was finally overall champion in 1996.

The Section A champion was the brood mare Fouroaks Reanne, who has done most of her winning in the north of England but now ventured into Wales and swept the board. The reserve champion was also from England, the barren mare Sunnyhill Gay Wand from the Isle of Wight. At 15 years old, Gay Wand was retired from the showring at this show. The youngstock champion, the bay three year old colt Kingsmead Barnum, had been given by his breeder "free to a good home"!

Section C champion was the barren mare Ashgrove Abigail, who has also won at the Royal Welsh Show three times and is now retired from the showring. Reserve Section C champion was the stallion Thorneyside Bay Prince, owned by Mrs Kath Panayiotou, who also owned the youngstock champion Parvadean Renegade, who had been champion at RASE. The yearling Penstrumbly Popstar (reserve champion), sired by the Welsh cob Yorkin Come Lucky, represented the Welsh part-breds in the breeders' Horse Of The Year Show qualifier, since the champion, Dutarvie Cat Burglar, had already qualified at the Royal Highland Show. Popstar finished up third against all other champions. The four year old Section B palomino gelding Gryngallt Perseus was ridden Section A and B champion, with another palomino, Tallares Sandpiper, winning the Section A class.

The Section B Wortley Jack Flash was first-ridden winner and mini champion in enormous classes, with the Section A palomino Cefngelli Amber leading-rein winner and reserve mini champion. The chestnut Section D mare Murrayhall Faith's Reward, who also qualified for Olympia last year, was C/D ridden champion, with the bay Section D gelding Cwmtawe Kinsey, who is usually ridden by 8 year old Abigail Carey, reserve champion.

The black Welsh cob gelding Bennetts Castle Shogun added another harness championship to his many Royal Welsh wins, and was also champion of the private driving section. Dyfrdwy Starlight won the Section A harness class for the eighth time, Donys Llawen was top of the Section Cs and Leyeswick Benross first for Section D stallions.
