Held on Sunday 3 August 2003 at the Shropshire Showground, Shrewsbury
The Welsh Part-Bred group of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society had planned a Championship Show of 45 classes for Part-Breds in various disciplines, but when they were offered a sponsorship of £2,500 from Kath and Angelo Panayiotou of the Kallistalodge Stud, Burnham, Buckinghamshire for a "New London Gold" qualifying competition, and further sponsorship from Brightwells Auctioneers for in-hand classes for pure-breds and Kilconquhar Castle Estates and Bedlay Stud for performance, the Show increased to 106 classes, and exhibitors travelled from far and wide to ensure the success of this inaugural event.
Qualification for the New London Gold competition was confined to the champions or reserves at the 30 WPCS Area Association Shows and many of the "big gun" qualifiers were kept for this prestigious event and not lose their freshness by competing in the morning breed classes.

New London Gold Section D Champion, Tymor Pele, with sponsor Mrs Kath Panayiotou, judge Mr Geriant Thomas, and Gemma Morris with rosettes. |
Glasgow-owned Gartconnel Shooting Star was the first of the HOYS Cuddy Breeders ticket-holders to add the New London Gold title to his impressive 2003 tally; fresh from his Royal Welsh Section A male championship he trotted out in a most impressive fashion for producer Colin Tibbey, on this hallowed showground where his namesake ancestor, Bleddfa Shooting Star, had showed off his virtues 85 years ago!
Reserve to Shooting Star in the London Gold was another current Royal Welsh winner, Robert Owens and Sian Morris's chestnut roan mare, Friars Posy. Posy, who was Royal Welsh youngstock champion in 1997, was champion at the Royal of England this year. She was also champion of the Brightwells breed classes in the morning, where the reserve champion was the stallion Joiners Kilkenny. Kilkenny, now seven years old, has competed at the Royal Welsh Show five times (there was no Show in 2001) and was third in 1996, fourth in 1997, fourth in 1999, fourth in 2002 and third in 2003, in classes of up to 56 entries!

The dun Section B two-year-old colt Skellorn Choirboy beat off his older rivals to claim his London Gold title. Choirboy was very well shown by 14-year-old Stacey Mansfield, who had travelled to Shrewsbury intending to ride her Section D, Montique Charioteer, but when it became obvious that the classes would clash, Stacey's 11-year-old sister, Stephanie, had a quick change and gave a polished performance on the large Cob gelding. Reserve London Gold champion, with judge Price Jones, was the six-year-old dark cream stallion Griashall Kiwi, to whom Price's father, the late Mr Willie Jones, had awarded the Royal Welsh championship in 1999. The Brightwells breed champion, Sandy Anderson's grey barren mare Paddock Northern Lustre, was third in the London Gold; she has had a consistent record following last year's Royal Show female championship, with overall championships this year at Stafford, Lincoln and the East of England.

Section B Champion, Mr Sandy Anderson's Paddock Northern Lustre, with judge Mrs Chris Rankin and sponsor Mr Terry Court. |
London Gold Section C champion was Fronarth Stud's roan stallion Fronarth Showman, who bears an uncanny resemblance to his sire, the now-dead 1989 Royal Welsh champion Gwelfro Tywysog. He was followed by Peter Sulsh's Royal Welsh Winter Fair champion Hywi Rhian and Huw and Lisa Reed's brood mare Tyngwndwn Daylight, the current Royal Welsh champion, who was also this Show's Brightwells champion. Daylight's foal Tyngwndwn Rose Queen, who also won her class, was sold at the Royal Welsh Show to Ilona Pykalainen, who has a large stud of Welsh sections A, B and D in Finland.

Scott Gibbons and his mother Patsy, of the Tymor Stud, had a field day in the Section D London Gold line-up, with two sons of their Crugybar Mabon Mai winning with the nine-year-old Tymor Pele and third with the seven-year-old Tymor The Tramp, who were separated by Fronarth Stud's Fronarth Model Lady, who won her class at the Royal Welsh and was Brightwells breed champion here. Pele, the HOYS Cuddy Breeders champion at Cheshire County, and The Tramp, who has not been shown until this year after winning his class at the 1999 Royal Welsh Show, were shown to great advantage by two of the breed's most competent younger generation handlers, Scott Gibbons and Stuart Morgan.

Robert Cockram, of the Radway Stud, also had a very successful day with his charges in the Part-Bred section. Champion of both London Gold and Brightwells categories was the three-year-old Henleydown Picturesque, which he produces for Judith Salmon. Picturesque, who is sired by Radway's Deanhills Royal Portrait, was supreme champion foal in 2000 at both the NPS and Ponies (UK) Shows, and Royal Portrait was also the sire of the reserve youngstock champion, the yearling filly Bradmore Catalena, whose dam was the former ridden Show Pony of the Year, Bradmore Catkin. Overall reserve Brightwells Part-Bred champion was Derek Morgan's four-year-old stallion Lowland Pizzazz, who won the JB Memorial supreme at Ponies (UK) as a yearling. The second, fourth and fifth London Gold prizes went to Pandy Tsoflias's Bryncadog Penny Royal, Billy Gwilliam's Perrington Statesman, and Anne Pritchard-Simmonds's Cupidhill Mystic Maid of Martell, who all live within ten miles of one another in Glamorgan, with the third prize going to Crafton Madam Butterfly, owned by Wyn Morris, MFH of the Pembrokeshire.

There was a healthy turnout of the very useful Welsh Cob x TB Part-Bred horses, mainly from Ann Roberts's Pentaran Stud in Anglesey, and the progeny of Terry and Jackie Jones's Penlanganol KC, whose most famous offspring is John Palfree's show-jumper Mister Woppitt, whose WPB name is Penlanganol Jasper.
Debbie Baker's Section C Starcrest Discovery, the 2001 Olympia champion, proved indefatigable in the ridden section, and another Section C, Nicki McGrail's Parvadean Lotta Bottle, was driving champion. Reserve harness champion was Steve Watts's Trixies Princess of Wales, which Steve had ridden over 100 miles from London to Leicester for charity the previous week.
