Lampeter Welsh Breeds Stallion Show 2009

Llanllyr Mansion,
18th April 2009

The Lampeter Stallion Show was blessed with glorious weather, a packed ringside including visitors from as far afield as the U.S.A., Holland and Sweden and large classes, especially yearlings with 39 colts and 47 fillies entered in section A and 40 colts and 49 section D fillies.

The Show president Mr Geraint Jones of the Nebo Stud judged the final championships where, understandably, sections C and D reigned supreme. Overall show supreme was Dewi Jones’ eleven-year-old section C stallion Tremymor Sportsman who was section C champion here in 2002 and section C champion out of 334 entries at the Royal Welsh Show in 2004. The following Saturday, Sportsman was proclaimed supreme again at the Cardigan Barley Saturday Show.

Tremymor Sportsman

Youngstock section C champion was the Jones family’s two-year-old filly Fronarth Miss Nerys whose sire, Fronarth Ginola was 3rd to Sportsman in the stallion class. Sportsman’s three-year-old son Tyngwndwn Lion King was reserve youngstock champion and best colt and he won his classes last year both here and at the Royal Welsh.

The Jones family triumphed again in section D with their eight-year-old stallion Fronarth Welsh Lion who was section D champion and reserve supreme. His breeding cannot be surpassed since his sire Ebbw Victor was Royal Welsh male champion five times and supreme in 1998 and his dam Fronarth Welsh Model female champion three times and when she went supreme in 1996, it was Ebbw Victor who stood reserve. Welsh Lion won a large Mid-Wales stallion class from the 2007 Royal Welsh champion Tyngwndwn Daniel; Brynithon Royal Diplomat bought on the 2004 Brightwells Royal Welsh Sale in 2004 for £9,000 won the South Wales stallion class, Brynnebo Magic by Ebbw Brynmor won the North Wales class and the former National champion Tymor The Tramp owned by Scott Gibbons of West Yorkshire won the “outside Wales” class.

Reserve section D champion and overall supreme youngstock was the three-year-old spectacular-moving colt Pennal Brynmor produced for Dafydd Harris of the Pennal Stud by Clare Granger and George Mitchell of Chingford, Essex. Here is another exhibit with impeccable bloodlines, sired by Gwenllan Brynmor, leased to Pennal Stud in 2005 out of Pennal Lively Maid whose parents are the multi champions Pennal Calon Lan and Rhystyd Fashion. Brynmor originally went to Essex to be broken to harness, where he is driven on the roads for eight miles every day. Reserve section D youngstock was Simon Bigley’s promising yearling colt Llanarth Fiery Jack sired by Menai Sparkling Magic. The section D three-year-old filly Ionos Ffion shown by WPCS retiring Young Ambassador Daniel Hughes, and another 2008 Royal Welsh winner, was supreme best filly.

The section A three-year-old filly Runshaw Heulwen enthralled everyone with her spectacular movement which is understandable when one realises that she is a double great-granddaughter of Coed Coch Bari (sold on the Coed Coch Sale in 1978 for 21,000 gns) one of the greatest movers of all times. Her sire, the chestnut Churtoncroft Aries is twenty years old and her dam, the chestnut Standwell Heidie by Coed Coch Superstar is nineteen. The seven-year-old Dukeshill Darcy won a 20-strong stallion class and was reserve champion. Darcy has a most impressive walk and beat two former HOYS Cuddy qualifiers Vervale Galileo and Idyllic Entrepreneur in his class. Reserve youngstock champion to Heulwen was Michael Cobley’s two-year-old bay colt, a very pretty colt with plenty of bone, he was another very impressive mover.

The eight-year-old cream stallion Griashall Valentino was section B champion; bought on the 2004 Brightwells Fayre Oaks Sale for £3,300, he has been many times champion since. Karen Cheetham’s three-year-old colt Carrwood Phoenix, who was reserve section B champion has been a prolific winner since his yearling days; his dam is the 1997 Royal Welsh champion Lemonshill Alarch. Lesley Hillard’s three-year-old filly Gryngallt Pretty Picture by Linksbury Royal Charm has also won important awards and was reserve youngstock champion.

Introduced this year were extra ridden Winter championships won by Brynodyn Sirius (lead-rein) and Hengwys Cherry Blossom (first ridden). Ridden champion was the section D gelding Nebo Joni Jones who was last year’s Royal Welsh ridden champion and was 4th to the champion Drumacre Lloer Solo at HOYS. Joni could not compete for the supreme since he was bred by the judge! John and Ann James’ section B mare Sianwood Amelia, from the same female family as the 1974 Pony Of The Year Harmony Bubbling Champagne, was reserve champion with Cosford Wellington winning the section A’s and Keeshen Lightning the section C’s.
