After five days of competition at the Horse of the Year Show held at the NEC Arena, Birmingham from 17 to 21 September, all the champions travel back on the Sunday evening for the Supreme Pony of the Year championship.

The supreme champion this year was the nine-year-old chestnut Welsh mountain pony gelding Penwayn Ryan, owned by Mrs Tracey Collett of Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire, and ridden by her 14-year-old daughter, Laura.

Penwayn Ryan was bred by the Watkins family of Pengenffordd, Talgarth, Brecon, and was sired by Moorcock Halcyon, who was a Welsh Pony and Cob Society premium stallion running out on the Breconshire Black mountains. Ryan was later gelded and spent his time being ridden around the farm on a halter until the Watkins grand-children outgrew him and he was offered for sale at last October's Brecon Sale. At the Sale, Ryan was "spotted" by local enthusiast Ricky Perry who appreciated his potential, bought him for £140 and sent him on to the Collett family. From the outset it was obvious that Ryan had enormous potential, and he has had a brilliant competition season, including winning the £1,000 supreme championship at the Ponies (UK) championships at Peterborough in August.

Ryan was also overall champion at the Welsh Pony and Cob Performance Show held at Felin Newydd, Llandefalle, Brecon on 13 and 14 September, where he won the ridden class, also first for working hunter and show jumping and second for dressage and hunter trials. This was the fourth successive time for Laura to win the overall championship at the Performance Show, having won previously on Bockmer Winston, Baverstock Talissa and Glenwood Caradog, the last of which won the second prize at the HOYS on Wednesday.
