4th & 5th October 2008 There were 607 Welsh Sections A, B, C, D, part-breds and un-registered ponies entered for the Brightwells Annual Autumn Hay-on-Wye Sale, the majority sold in the grass ring but some un-handled ponies were sold in the afternoon in the market ring. Each day started with a Foal Show judged by Mrs Gwen Heppenstall, the results of which were: Saturday Section A: 1 - and champion N Edwards and S Golding’s colt Telaid Bara A Fel not sold but sold subsequently.
Section B:

Sunday Section A: 1 - W Edwards’ filly Gemstone Daria, sold to S M Cole of Barley for £570 ![]() Gemstone Daria sold for £570 Photograph by Shelley Dobbs Top of the Sale at £3,850 was the bay roan three-year-old Section A colt Penboeth Bandit consigned by Williams Brothers of the Crimond Stud, Swansea. Bandit was bought by Leslie Owen of the Trehwfa Stud in Anglesey who swept the board in North Wales some twenty years ago with his good-moving Section A stallion Coed Coch Telaid. Williams Brothers also sold the three-year-old grey filly Crimond Bouquet (£850), the five-year-old bay mare Crimond Secret (£1,000), the four-year-old bay mare Crimond Actress (£880) and the bay yearling filly Crimond Delight (£600) bought back individually by the brothers Philip and Simon. Welsh tenor and former Lampeter Show secretary Timothy Evans collects “Revel” mares and bought the nine-year-old Revel So-Sure, also from the Crimond consignment, for £1,600. The palomino yearling colt Synod Honey Gift, also from Crimond and bought here last year for £700, stays in the Swansea area, bought by the Dark family of Llanrhidian for £1,650. The second-highest price of the Sale (£2,050) was paid by Mrs G Griffiths of Brynfach, Newtown for Mrs Herdman’s three-year-old skewbald filly Judy sired by a traditional coloured cob out of and un-registered Section D mare. The top foal in 2007 was Glyncoch Brandy sold for £2,000; this year it was Glyncoch Serenade sold for £1,100 to Barry White of Lymington, owner of Felinmor Distinction, winner of the junior Welsh Cob stallion class at the Royal Welsh. John Gray of Thorneyside Stud, Buckinghamshire bought the top Section C, the eleven-year-old chestnut mare Tirpentwys Valerie with an attractive colt foal at foot by Thorneyside The Terminator for £950. Top Welsh part-bred, also at £950, was the palomino yearling filly Safnycoed Madonna, grand-daughter of Derwen Royal Express and she was bought by Mr M Jones of Cwmddauddwr, Rhayader. Pandy Tsoflias’ home-bred four-year-old grey part-bred gelding Bryncadoc Autumn Leaf, a very kind riding pony sold for £900 to Mr L Jenkins, Bodside, Hay-on-Wye. After having a major reduction of 73 ponies at the Brightwells Spring Sale, Evan Lloyd Evans of the Criccieth Stud had another reduction of 22 here. Top of the Criccieth consignment at £920 was the eight-year-old bay mare Betws Ufudd sired by Bengad Rumex who was 2nd under saddle at the Horse Of The Year Show three days later. Having been born at Gwyn Berry's Betws Stud in Betws-y-Coed, Ufudd returned to Betws-y-Coed, bought by Alun and Nerys (Gwyn's niece) Davies of Dylasau Isaf. Top Section D at £900 was the bay yearling filly Lynbrie Lili by Cascob Ceredig; she was bought by Sarah Whittaker, Radnor Cottage, Presteigne. 33 animals were sold for export, 18 to Holland, 12 Section A foals, colts and fillies, all cream, dun, chestnut, bay or black were sold to Spain and 1 each to Germany, France and Denmark.
