30th October 2008 Versatile equestrian Alice McCullagh has rounded off a busy season with a clean sweep at the British Show Pony Society Native pony Championships held at Arena UK in Grantham. Competing on 30th October 2008 on her own Section D 12 year old Welsh Cob Gelding Gwarchod Sparkling Comet, Alice took overall 1st place in all three of the Open, Gold Cup & Desert Orchid Classes. The event was rounded off with victory in two Championships and a final place in the Supreme of the show. ![]() Gwarchod Sparkling Comet Photograph by Equinational Gwarchod Sparkling Comet was bred by Dr Glyn Jones at the Gwarchod Stud, Banc y Pennau, Bow Street, Ceredigion. The dam was Gwarchod Sparkling Lady and the Sire was Cippyn Red Flyer. This remarkable achievement came hot on the heels of a fantastic performance at Horse of the Year Show last month when Alice and Gwarchod Sparkling Comet came 2nd in a very strong M and M Working Hunter Pony class exceeding 138cm. In 2007 Alice was Champion Working Hunter Pony competitor riding Northallerton Veterinarian Mr David Witterick’s Folly II, and this year she took 2nd, 3rd and 7th place rosettes in the three classes that she contested. Alice said “It was always going to be difficult to top winning and going Champion at Horse of The Year Show last year, but this season has been fantastic. We have had many individual wins including at British Show Pony Society Championships in the summer and also again as part of the very successful England Team”…..”this has been a fitting end to a fabulous season”. This busy 2008 season has also seen Alice riding racehorses for North Yorkshire Trainer Edwin Tuer, and British Eventing for Jewellery designer Rosemary Hetherington in the Sculpture to Wear colours. ![]() Gwarchod Sparkling Comet Photograph by The Event Photographer Alice a student at Queen Margaret’s School, Escrick Park York is studying Maths, German, History & PE at ‘A’ Level, and is also putting the finishing touches to her programme plans for 2009 including an exciting new sponsorship which she expects to be announced before the London International Horse Show at Olympia in December 2008. ‘We are very pleased to have done so well this year with our Welsh Cob Section D Gelding Gwarchod Sparkling Comet and with his exceptional temperament we have shown how versatile our Welsh Section D geldings can be. Comet will jump over everything we put in front of him’ said Sarah McCullagh.
