25^th Anniversary Medal Show, Pencoed College
6^th April 2008

To celebrate the 25^th anniversary of the Glamorgan Association, the Welsh Pony and Cob Society awarded medals which attracted record entries from a wide area, the largest class being 24 section A yearling fillies. Another contributory factor towards enhanced entries was the fact that this Show is a qualifier for the National Championships to be held at Shrewsbury on 3^rd August.

Section C champion and supreme with the three judges, Mrs Charmian Middleton and Messrs Sandy Anderson and William Lloyd was Janine and Lauren Hadley’s seven-year-old home-bred stallion Laurtom Glyndwr. Glyndwr was 2^nd in an enormous class at last year’s Royal Welsh Show and his foals have fetched high prices on the Society Sales. Glyndwr was produced in spanking form and well-shown by Lauren. Reserve section C champion was Val and Rob Robinson’s three-year-old colt Ty’reos Sundowner who was a consistent winner as a yearling but was not shown last year to allow to mature. Sundowner was produced by Chris and Michael Cobley of Talywaun, Pontypool. Sundowner’s dam Ty’reos Aggie Gwyn is a sister to the twice Royal Welsh champion Ty’reos Furietta.

Champion Welsh Part-Bred and reserve supreme was the four-year-old stallion Cupidhill Calvados owned by Mrs Anne Pritchard-Simmonds of Cardiff. Calvados, who was last year’s Wales and Border Counties points champion, is a member of the successful family: Trellech Courvoisier x Griashall Mystic Megan. Reserve was the large Welsh part-bred, Karen Archer’s Crimson Fifth Edition sired by Hurstead Spruce.

Two stallions were champion and reserve section A, the winner being the seven-year-old bay Ceulan Stud’s Sunwillow Irving. Irving is currently away being broken to harness by driving expert Wayne Isaac. Irving was sold to Holland as a foal but brought back by Kathy and Joanna Sheil of the Dukeshill Stud who were reserve champion with their own stallion Dukeshill Darcy and Irving and Darcy ran out together during the winter of 2005. Dukeshill also won the yearling class with Dukeshill Kings Ransom and the two/three-year-old class with Nantdywyll Penaig.

Two stallions were also champion and reserve section D with the championship going to the five-year-old dun Davids Victor Llwyd owned and bred by Jo Claes and Jane Bugler of the Davids Stud. Victor Llwyd is one of two dun stallions owned by Davids Stud, both sons of the famous Ebbw Victor, Victor Llwyd being the last foal of Ebbw Victor who was Royal Welsh champion in 1998 at the age of 19 years. Reserve was Carl Robinson’s Danaway De Niro, son of another famous stallion Trevallion Harry.

In section B the females turned the tables on their male counterparts, the championship going to the Landon family’s grey Brynoffa Juliana by Cottrell Artiste and the reserve went to Lorraine and Les Partridge’s bay home-bred Rosedale Fairy Gold sired by their own Sianwood Goldrush.

Ridden classes had their own separate championships, the mini championship was won by the section A gelding Treowen Rhys who qualified at the 2005 Royal Welsh for the Horse Of The Year Show when owned by Amy Jones of Pontypridd but has now been bought back by his breeders and was ridden by seven-year-old Molly Ann Rees. Reserve mini was the section A lead-rein mare Ceffyllwyd Snowdrop who has twice been placed at the Horse Of The Year Show in 2004 and 2005 ridden by Lauren Wilson of Hengoed but now ridden by her younger sister Mia.

Supreme ridden champion was Iona Trotman’s grey Welsh part-bred mare Bryncadoc Penny Royal who was novice ridden pony winner at last year’s Royal Welsh Show. Penny Royal was bred locally by Pandy Tsoflias and is sired by Copybush Park Royal. Reserve ridden supreme was Catrin Reed’s section B gelding Rhydspence Rhys from the Nebo /Tyngwndwn Stud. Rhys, who was the top-priced section B on the 2007 Fayre Oaks Sale is a son of Rhydspence Russet which Catrin rode to win here last year. The other ridden winners were India Latter’s Heniarth Quinell (A), Emma Simpson’s Gerdig Telynor (C) and Menai Stud’s Menai Martino (D).
