Welsh National Foal Show 2009

Royal Welsh Showground
25th October 2009

There was a very good turnout of foals at the 22nd Welsh National Foal Show organised by the Brecon and Borders Welsh Pony and Cob Association, the largest number of entries in one class being the 58 section A filly foals.

Supreme champion from 255 entries was Veronica Layton’s outstanding section C colt foal Caebryn Endeavour produced by Chris Cobley who showed his fantastic movement to great advantage. Endeavour is sired by Jack Bowerman’s Llanwenarth Flash Jack and Jack, on holiday in South Africa, was telephoned with the good news. Reserve champion section C was another exceptional colt Laurtom Dancemaster which had been purchased unseen by his owner Tarri Patchen from the Laurtom Stud when only a few days old.

Reserve supreme, after winning her class of 58 entries of which 34 were present, was Stewart and Ann Franklin’s grey section A filly foal Sarum Romance produced by Adam Fletcher. Romance is sired by the Dutch-bred Vechtzicts Hywel who was male champion at the 2005 Royal Welsh Show and Romance is his first foal in this country. This was Romance’s third championship in three weeks which is not surprising since she is a real little “show-off”. Her dam Cledwyn Red Rose has produced a string of champions for the Sarum Stud.

Sarum Romance

This filly class is probably the largest foal gathering of any breed seen in Britain this year and 2nd to Romance was Islyn Stud’s Islyn Hyfryd; another exceptional filly, her dam Lacy Heather Bee is full-sister to the stallion Lacy Buzbee which Islyn Stud sold to top the recent Fayre Oaks Sale at £9,200. 3rd in this huge class was the bay Ceulan Lilly which Bethan Hooper and Rhydian Donati bought on the Fayre Oaks Sale where she was the third-highest filly foal, the second-highest being her stable-mate Ceulan Carol a full-sister to their 2008 foal purchase Ceulan Calon Lan who has already won eight championships.

The section A colt class was the second-strongest class with 29 entries and won by Philip Ward-Burton’s dark grey, almost black with four white legs good-moving colt Llanai Legacy. 2nd in this class was Gwilym Howatson’s Colne Tornado purchased on the Fayre Oaks Sale for £3,200.

Heniarth Ting-a-Ling, a grey filly and champion of section B had also won at her two previous competitions at the Royal of England and the National Championships at Shrewsbury. Her other appearance was at the foot of her dam, the many-times champion and now-retired Eyarth Windflower in the Cuddy competition at the Horse Of The Year Show. Mandy Jones’ Melau Sian, 2nd to Ting-a-Ling and reserve champion section B is sired by Eyarth Tayma who was the 2008 WPCS sire-rating points winner.

The eye-catching chestnut colt Mountainhare Magic produced by Stuart Morgan was section D champion; this is a lucky show for the Mountainhare Stud, they were also champion here in 2006 with a black filly, Mountainhare Cariad “cousin” to Magic. Reserve section D champion was Cilsane Stud’s Cilsane Charisma sired by Gwenllan Brynmor who is also the sire of Pennal Brynmor, this year’s Royal Welsh champion from 561 entries.

Heniarth had their second championship in the riding pony section with the cream section A filly Heniarth Featherbed, winner of the M&M lead-rein class. Featherbed is sired by their Colne Turbo, purchased on the 2007 Fayre Oaks Sale for £10,500. Fairywood Cleopatra, reserve riding pony champion is a daughter of Cadlanvalley Josephine who was section B champion here when she was a foal.

Champion Welsh part-bred was the filly Talponciau Cameo produced by her breeder Janice Parry of Talponciau for Elizabeth and Sarah Coulter; this was her third outing and third championship. Litton Stud’s Litton Dancing Dawn was reserve champion, sired by their Llanarth Aristocrat who has sired many champions of this Show.
