The 716 Section A, B and Part Bred ponies entered for the 2006 Brightwells Fayre Oaks Sale were the third highest since 1974 when the Sale was spread over three days. Of the 716 ponies catalogued, 643 were forward of which 496 (77%) were sold for a Sale total of £476,490 averaging £961 (up from £877 last year). 29 ponies were sold to Holland, 4 to Denmark, 2 each to Australia, France and Sweden, and 1 each to Norway and Finland. Two Section A mares Friars Tears of Gold (£11,000) and Springbourne Cleo (£9,000) and a Section A gelding Gwauniarll Nathan (£8,000) exceeded the previous top Fayre Oaks Section A figure of £7,000. The £9,800 paid for the Part Bred yearling colt Small Land Tapdance was also a record for Part Breds. The eight-year-old chestnut Friars Tears of Gold has the same sire (Pontgam Supreme) as International Champion Friars Posy and her dam Friars Tiny Tears is full sister to Royal Welsh Champion Friars Goldilocks. Tears of Gold was bought by Mrs Carol Michael of the Westbury Equine Sports Therapy Centre. The nine-year-old grey Springbourne Cleo is a winner of several championships, her sire Breachwood Marwyn was Royal Welsh Champion in 1989 and her dam Springbourne Cara was twice champion at the Bath and West. Cleo was bought by Dutch breeder Henrie Leeuwenhaag; Cleo's sister Springbourne Clara is a Dutch National Champion. Gwauniarll Nathan was bought (lot 24) as a foal on the 1998 Fayre Oaks Sale. Nathan, produced by Mandy Nevin and ridden by Jessica Nevin for his owner Louise Symon, was bought by the Jackson family of the Willow Stud in West Yorkshire. He has qualified for both HOYS and Olympia 2006; he stays with Mandy for HOYS after which he goes to the Jacksons for Olympia. Alan and Jan Pearce's chestnut filly Glyncoch Kitty, full sister to their former Sale topper Glyncoch Kelly was top Section A foal at £3,200 and went to her new home with Arthur Jones at Llaniestyn. The second highest filly foal Cerdin and Doreen Jones' roan Synod Precious also went to North Wales at £2,000. Phillip and Simon Williams's seven-year-old grey Broadpool Vintage, champion at Lampeter in 2005 was top male Section A at £4,200 and was bought by Mrs Finnegan of Southampton. The eleven-year-old grey stallion Friars Bonheddwr winner at the Royal Welsh Show in 1997 and 2002 and with the same sire as Tears of Gold sold to Ilona Pykalainen of Finland for £3,600. Harold Zoet sold two bay Section A stallions, the six-year-old Powys Shon (£3,000) and the five-year-old Sunwillow Irving (£2,900). Powys Shon, Bath and West Champion in 2005 has been on lease at Ceulan Stud for two years and Sunwillow Irving spent 2006 at Dukeshill Stud. Shon was bought by Julie Devenney of the Julmar Stud in Lancashire and Sunwillow Irving replaces him at Ceulan. Two Section A palomino colt foals each made £2,600; Blanche Mystique is facing a long journey to Bonnie Woods of Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. Weston Dandy Man did not have far to travel having been bought by Mr Weaver of Pontsticill, Merthyr Tydfil. Four Section A stallions, five geldings and fourteen mares sold for £2,000 or more. The numbers selling for £1,000 or more for Section A were: 18 foals, 3 yearlings, 8 two-year-olds, 10 three-year-olds, 22 mares, 4 stallions and 16 geldings. The three top male Section B's were youngsters headed by Rosedale Stud's two-year-old bay Rosedale Royal Applause, son of their former Fayre Oaks "bargain" Caraway Royal Anthem which sold for £4,400 to Miss Siwan Ward of Ashbourne. The three-year-old grey Pennwood Alakai went back to his breeder Clive Morse of Pennwood, Whitland, Carmarthen at £3,600 and the Dutch-bred grey three-year-old Hoekhorst Imperial, Eyarth-bred on both sides, went to Miss Barker-Wild of Poulton-Le-Flyde at £2,400. The cream colt foal Laithehill Mozart at £2,300 accompanies Blanche Mystique to New South Wales. Seven Section B females and three filly foals sold for £2,000 or more with equal top prices of £3,200 each paid for Len and Anne Bigley's seven-year-old grey mare Polaris Geum and Dewi Evans's black filly foal Hilin Mona Lisa. Geum went to Davina Bethell's Cross Foxes Stud which has had such enormous successes with "Polaris" stock and Mona Lisa went to Peter and Anne Jones's Menai Stud whose remaining Section B mares are all getting on in years. Dewi Evans's other black Hilin filly foal Serena sold for £2,800 to Roma Wright-Smith of the Russetwood Stud in Newark who has had considerable successes with her 2005 Fayre Oaks Sale purchase Duntarvie Venetia. Chris and Pat Gibbons of Rhydspence sold their eye-catching cream filly Cleo, daughter of the noted Horsegate Carousel, for £2,300 to the Bowman family of Truro. Clare Willis-Burton of the Pentrefelin Stud in Abergavenny is well-established with Sections A, C and D and now enters Section B at the top at £3,000 with Edwin Prosser's good mare Cottrell Arian, daughter of the world famous Rotherwood State Occasion. Section B totals selling for £1,000 or more were: 7 foals, 6 yearlings, 4 two-year-olds, 10 three-year-olds, 14 mares and 13 geldings. Rosemary Rees's dark grey Part Bred yearling colt Small Land Tapdance which sold to Clive Johnson of Co Fermanagh for £9,800 was an exceptional youngster and is bound to make his mark later in life either as a sire or ridden. Next highest price was £2,700 paid by Mrs Garner of Wrexham for Carol Evans's three-year-old gelding Cardines Dewdrop sired by Seasons Mahogany who was recently acquired by her neighbouring Treowen Stud. The Part Bred figures selling for £1,000 or more were: 4 one and two-year-olds, 5 mares and 10 geldings. Report by Dr Wynne Davies
