THE 52nd ANNUAL FAYRE OAKS SALE
Afer 5 Fayre Oaks Sales held on a Saturday followed by 46 expanding Sales held on a Friday
and Saturday, to enable prospective purchasers who were working on Fridays to attend, Brightwells
Auctioneers decided to move the Sale to Saturday and Sunday.
This move proved to be a wise decision with last year’s
first day average of £571 increasing to £672 while the Saturday average of £849
remained steady for this year’s Sunday Sale with last year’s second day top
price figure of £3,300 increasing to £6,000 for Robina and Ronnie Mills’s
delightful palomino section A yearling filly Rookery Sound of Music which went
to Holland. Sound of Music’s sire Littlestones Red Fox was sold on this Sale
in 2003 to Brierdene Stud for £3,300.
The 2001 Sale total of £143,405 almost trebled to £420,510 with overall average increasing
from £418 to £874 for the 481 lots sold.
27 lots were accepted for the “High Flyer Sale” on Saturday
evening with last year’s top section A figure of £7,000 being equalled for
Jocelyn Price’s dun leading-rein mare Pendock Jade which had qualified for HOYS
and the 2004 section B top figure of £5,300 increasing to £10,000 for Steve
Perrins’s section B stallion Heaton Romeo. The ten-year-old Heaton Romeo was
described as “completely wasted” at the Heaton Stud since they have only other
one other section B which is Romeo’s dam, the twenty five-year-old Katrina of

Romeo was purchased by Philip Booth of the Birkingbrook Stud in Derbyshire who has
bred several foals sired by Romeo. Mr Booth started his section B stud with

Showman on the 1996 Sale and Rhoson Tlws (for £3,000) on the 2003 High Flyer
Sale.
Romeo’s progeny were also very much in demand, Clive Morse,

yearling daughter Laithehill Valeta consigned by her breeder Robert Hensby of
West Yorkshire. Clive also bought the smart Laithehill yearling colt Mustard
Seed for £3,500.
There was an exceptional offering of section B colts led by
Sianwood Stud’s magnificent yearling Sianwood Sh-Boom, descended from the
influential Abercrychan strain originating from the Foundation Stock mare
Antonia foaled in 1955; Sh-Boom sold for £4,000 to Mrs Bradley of Lancashire
Linksbury Stud’s three-year-old colt Picasso sold for £3,800 and stayed
in South Wales being purchased by the Dark family of Crofty, Swansea.
Section B females also found a ready market led by
Tweetie Nimmo’s four-year-old dun mare Duntarvie Venetia, this year’s champion
at the North of England Show, which sold for £6,000 to Roma Wright-Smith
of the Russetwood Stud in Newark.
The six-year-old palomino Farchynys Melyn, purchased here
last year from her breeder at £800, returned broken to ride and sold for £4,500
to Warren Gibson of Bridgewater. Another section B palomino, the three-year-old filly Stoak Tanya,
winner at many major Shows this year and sister to well-known ridden ponies, sold for
£4,400 to Jill Waterhouse of Selby. The ridden seven-year-old roan mare Eskdale Valencia
stayed in Wales, purchased by the Davies family of Llandrindod.
The Waxwing Stud in Scotland have done well with the
progeny of their Moelview Mohawk including the top sire award at this year’s
Royal Welsh; they offered two top-class mares Llangeitho Princess Royal and
Mynach Fleur both in foal to Mohawk and both were purchased by Robert Jones of
the Moelview Stud, Dolgellau at £3,000 each.
Section A females also created much interst. Following on
from Pendock Jade at £7,000 and Rookery Sound of Music at £6,000 (above),
Ceri Fell of the Brynseion Stud, Stoke Poges paid £3,500 for Elwyn Davies’s
fourteen-year-old mare Eppynt Solstice whose sister Silhouette sold here last
year for £2,600.
Two yearling fillies purchased here or at Hay-on-Wye last
year which showed a good return were Gwen Heppenstall’s Blackhill Guess (£300
in 2004) which sold for £3,000 and the Hoeke family’s Pontgam Sweetheart (£400) which fetched £2,300.
Waxwing Stud paid £2,100 for Synod Stud’s grey colt foal
Synod Montanna closely followed by Catryn Bigley’s palomino colt foal Llanarth
Echo which went to the Prater family at £1,800. Brian and Betty French had a major reduction of 16 of their
Forlan ponies; all beautifully presented and they totalled £18,200 with a top
figure of £2,300 for their nine-year-old mare Forlan Harebell.
Paul Brightwell’s four-year-old mare Cosford Mellitza topped
the part-breds at £2,600 followed by two from Small-Land Stud at £2,000 each, the
yearling colt Maldino and the three-year-old filly Annalisa.
Palominos were again in greatest demand amongst the
geldings, the six-year-old Brwmstan Silvester who had completed a very successful first season
in leading-rein, sold for £3,400. 28 animals were sold overseas, 11 each to Holland
and Denmark, 2 each to Sweden and France and 1 each to Germany and Canada.
