Brightwells Easter Court Sale 2009

Leominster
23rd May 2009

It was an interesting experience to visit the 10-acre Easters Court site, headquarters of Brightwells, the official Auctioneers of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society. One large building accommodated the Welsh pony and cob Sale, another was set up in readiness for the Fine art and antiques Sale (where many horse sale-goers enjoyed a visit), another full of vintage cars etc.

151 lots were catalogued with a top price of £2,300 for Mr John Llewellyn-James’ impressive three-year-old bay section D filly Avonvalley Tigra. Tigra is sired by Avonvalley Tiger Harry who is also the sire of the three-year-old dun colt Avonvalley Pendderyn which sold for £6,000 two weeks previously at the Brightwells Royal Welsh Spring Sale. Last year Tigra won 1st prize at Devon County and 3rd at Glanusk. Tigra was bought by Mrs D. Evans, Llanwrtyd Wells.

The palomino seven-year-old section B gelding Pwllsarn Popcorn bred by the late Miss Ann Morgan sold for £1,150 to Mrs S. Warwick. Ann bought one or two foals annually from her great friend the late Mrs Homfray of Penllyn and Popcorn was sired by the 1996 Royal Welsh champion Cwrtycadno Cadfridog out of Penllyn Pepper.

Another palomino seven-year-old gelding who was greatly admired was the Section C Twmbarlwm Lancelot sired by Parvadean Lotta Bottle out of Persie Nanette who came from Scotland to Ceulan as a foal and was a very good producer. Nanette is full-sister to the South African top sire Persie Nimrod. Lancelot was bought by Dutchman Harold Zoet for £920. Harold bought a total of 17, 6 section A’s, 5 B’s, 1 C, 4 D’’s and 1 Welsh part-bred and was under-bidder on many others.

The four-year-old chestnut roan section A mare Rookery Bridie at £680 was a bargain; a consistent winner in hand, she will make a very valuable riding pony. Edwin Prosser’s section A mare Thistledown Little Bird was another bargain at £450; she had been professionally broken in.
