BRIGHTWELLS ROYAL WELSH SALE |
||
|
Having held the Royal Welsh Sale of Welsh Cobs, Welsh ponies of Cob-type and Welsh part-breds on a Friday, Saturday and Monday since 1990, an exploratory Sale was held on three consecutive days this year which proved a resounding success with record trade and attendances. The Sale total at £620,128 was the highest ever (£18,942 for the first Sale in 1977 and up from £327,518 in 2000), similarly the highest percentage sold of 84% (579 out of 690 animals) and, for the first time ever, a four-figure average price of £1,071. 34 animals were sold for export, led by 11 to Germany, 7 to Holland, 6 to Norway, 4 each to Sweden and France and 1 each to Denmark and the Czech Republic, the latter being the black section D filly foal Menai Primadonna which fetched £4,800 Top of the Sale at £13,000 was Parvadean Stud's nine-year-old chestnut section C stallion Parvadean The General which was the wedding present to Justin Davis from his father on the occasion of his marriage to Janine seven years ago. Under-bidder was Derek Conti of the Rangeview Stud, Salisbury who had leased him for the last two years. The General, who has five champion brothers in the UK and overseas, was bought by racehorse owner Julia Maddever of Newmarket as a future "husband" for Synod Relegance which she bought on this Sale as a foal in 2001 for £12,925. Another "first" for section D was a ridden gelding at £9,500 overtaking the breeding stock, two of which, a mare and a stallion, sold for £9,000 each. Top gelding was Julie Evans's nine-year-old bay Nebo Joni Jones who headed enormous ridden classes at Ponies (UK) and Northleach this year and came within a whisker of qualifying for HOYS and Olympia. Joni Jones was bought by Arwel Davies of GarnswIlt, Ammanford. The mare to fetch £9,000 was the thirteen-year-old Thorneyside Lady Boss, sister to the two Royal Welsh champions Thorneyside Flyer and Thorneyside The Boss. Lady Boss was bought by the Prater family who have moved their Rhencullen Stud from Hertfordshire to Ceredigion and had Royal Welsh winners this year in both sections A and D. The four-year-old chestnut stallion Brynithon Royal Diplomat at £9,000 also had "Thorneyside" connections being sired by Thorneyside The Terminator. Winner at the 2002 WPCS Centenary Show, Diplomat was bought by Andrew Swistun whose Osbourn Stud was formed at Llanmorlais, near Swansea in 1975. Highest-priced ridden mare at £5.000 was Ray Williams's seven-year-old chestnut Rhillas Gold Coin. Ridden by his daughter Joanne Morgan, Gold Coin fared well at show jumping, dressage and hunter trials at the recent WPCS Performance Show. She was bought by the SRS Show team from Berkshire comprising of Sue and Sophie Reeve and Richard Holt who have qualified their section C mare Hywi Bobby Dazzler for the Olympia finals and have their sights on qualifying a C and a D next year! The top consignment of 18 (including 8 foals) from Parvadean totalled £36,420 followed by £22,500 for 10 from Thorneyside and £18,860 for 20 (of which 15 were foals) from Brynithon. Dr Wynne Davies.
