BRIGHTWELLS ROYAL WELSH SALE
of Welsh Cobs, Welsh Ponies of Cob-type and Welsh part-breds.
Royal Welsh Showground. 17, 18 and 20 October 2003.

The increased trade experienced at the auctions of Welsh Mountain Ponies, Welsh Ponies section B and their part-breds continued at the Brightwells Royal Welsh Sale, of Section C, D and their part breds, where the Sale total was £530,100 (up from £358,938 in 2001 and £485,979 in 2002) with the highest average figure ever of £978 for the 542 lots sold.

The section D mare at £8,500 was the nine-year-old Fronarth Esther by Derwen Desert Express out of the 1999 Royal Welsh champion Fronarth Boneddiges and the section C was the seven-year-old  sired by Synod Roger who was Royal Welsh champion five times and she sold for £6,500.

Two records which were broken this time were for brood mares, both black and both bought by Kath and Angelo Panayiotou of the Kalistalodge Lodge Stud, Burnham, Buckinghamshire.

The Fronarth/Blaengwen consignment of 14 from the Jones Brothers and Gwyn and Nicola Jones and sons totalled £36,700 (averaging £2,621) and the Synod consignment of 7 from Cerdin, Doreen and Amanda Jones totalled £20,033 (averaging £2,862). Fronarth Stud already hold the section D filly foal record of £7,500 (Fronarth Valmai in 2001) and Synod Stud have the overall section D record (stallion Synod Robert Black £11,000 in 1999) and section C foal record (Synod Relegance £11,000 in 2001).

Top of the Sale at £9,500 was the section D yearling colt Blaengwen Wayne Rooney (also from the Fronarth/Blaengwen consignment) and he was sold to Mr Graham Schofield of the Dearne Valley Stud, Mexborough, South Yorkshire. Interestingly exactly 25 years ago at the Llanarth Sales (the fore-runner of the Royal Welsh Sale) Mr Schofield paid double the previous record (1,800 gns) for the yearling colt Trevallion Flash Jack who has turned out to be one of the most successful sires of all times. In the meantime Mr Schofield has become one of the leading exhibitors of Welsh Cobs in harness, culminating with the 2001 Horse of the Year Show Welsh championship with Gwynfaes Sion driven by Janice Clough.

Horeb Undeg

Top-priced section D colt foal at £3,500 was Julie Evans’s Haighmoor Deio and he was bought by Fronarth Stud who had bred his sire Fronarth Victor, a son of Fronarth Boneddiges. Two filly foals sired by the 2002 Royal Welsh champion Gwynfaes Culhwch were outstanding examples of the progeny of this young sire; Horeb Stud’s Horeb Undeg sold for £4,600 to Sandra and Peter Watkins of the Triad Stud in Clwyd (who also bought last year’s top lot Felinmor Custom Maid) and Gwynfaes Stud’s own Gwynfaes Gwendydd sold for £3,200 to Frenchman Dr Etienne Stevens. Fronarth Stud’s filly foal Fronarth Amazing Grace sold to new breeder Mr Wiederker of Switzerland for £3,600.

Laurtom Golden Spark

The top section C stallion was the seven-year-old Laurtom Golden Spark which had been bought for £1,250 on the 2000 Brightwells Spring Sale; he was consigned by Irishman Mr Caddoo and he was bought by David Broster of Huddersfield for £4,500. The four-year-old Talyllyn Abel went to Maria Axberg-Fagerling of Sweden for £3,000. A very promising palomino colt foal Parvadean Gold Top sired by the harness and ridden winner Parvadean Lotta Bottle sold for £2,000 to Caroline Sutton of Wincanton. Amongst the Synod consignment was the delightful bay filly foal Synod Sweet Celina for which Carol and Stuart Crutchley of the Caerddaniel Stud, West Midlands paid £3,100.
