Welsh Cob Stallion International Success
Climbing to fame – the tiny village of Penmachno in the
Conwy Valley and all because of one man and his horse.
Meirion Jones of Machno Stud, Nant-y-Crogwyn has his Welsh Cobs and ponies grazing all around the village; his
reputation is known far and wide and he sells the animals he breeds all over the UK and Europe.
But now one horse, the Welsh Cob stallion Carregcoch Bleddyn, has been named Leading Sire of Performance
Ponies 2005 by the British Equestrian Federation and in January Meirion will receive an award commemorating
his success. It will be the first ever
award to be presented by the Federation to a pony sire here in the
UK.
Bleddyn, who’s sire was the famous Cathedine Express, is graded
“Elite” with the Sports Pony Stud Society and is the only Welsh Section ‘D’ Cob
among the exclusive eight “Elite” registered stallions in Britain.
Meirion told me, “This first-ever award to be presented here
is a major turning point in British performance pony breeding.
But it comes as no surprise to the
Continentals; they have admired Bleddyn’s progeny for many years.
“His offspring have been exported to
Europe including three of his
four stallions produced to date – Machno Carwyn
(Switzerland), Machno Hedd (France) and
Machno Spartacus(France)
“I now hope that his latest stallion material, Machno Rembrandt born this year can stay in the
UK now that his sire is so highly recognised here” added Meirion.
Carwyn, who went to Switzerland, is winner of two European Individual Gold medals,
four Swiss National Golds and one bronze.
In his performance career he
was placed in 25 grand prix with seven wins and a winner of 50 of 130 top class
competitions.
Now his first foal born in France – Nath
Carwin Du Serein – is taking the honours and was French National Champion of
2004. Needless to say, Grandfather
Bleddyn and owner Meirion are very proud of the youngster!
