PSHP Stallion Parade at Burghley Horse Trials
Friday 4 September 2009

Dear Stallion owner The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials from 3-6 September 2009 and the Lead Body for British Performance Sport Horses and Ponies (PSHP) are staging a stallion parade in the young horse ring on Friday 4 September.

Up to 20 ridden stallions, including proven event sires, all of which are graded, will parade at lunchtime in a spectacle for all visitors, giving breeders plenty of time to view prospective sires for next breeding season.

The British Equestrian Federation and PSHP have been working together for several years now to improve the quality and breeding of our horses and ponies and are pleased to be linking with Burghley Horse Trials once again to showcase these stallions for the future of sport horse breeding. The stallion parade complements perfectly the showcase for successful young event horse breeding which is the Burghley Young Event Horse programme, now supported by Dubarry.

Guidelines for Burghley Stallion Parade
Friday 4 September 2009

Eligibility

In order to take part in this Stallion parade a stallion must be currently graded /approved/licenced for breeding with a UK studbook or daughter studbook which is on the DEFRA list of recognised studbooks and that is dedicated to the breeding of sport horses or ponies, or has a specific section for sport horses or ponies in which the stallion is listed. A graded/approved/licensed Stallion is one that has been evaluated and assessed for conformation, type, movement and correctness by a panel of professional judges of an accredited and recognized DEFRA studbook and has been approved to stand at public stud, or has been graded abroad by a WBFSH member studbook using these criteria and accepted into such a studbook in due course. The assessment process must also have included a five stage vetting with particular investigation of heritable or genetic conditions or vices.

All stallions must have up to date influenza vaccinations and passports, by law, must accompany stallions to the venue. They will be checked and stamped by a BEF official. As all stallions will not be displayed individually but also be required to appear together at the end of the parade only stallions that are used to such situations should be entered for this parade.

Progeny

Eligible stallions that are deceased, are in quarantine or are based permanently based abroad but are still available by AI may be represented by their progeny but graded stallions or geldings, as opposed to mares, are preferred for safety reasons.

Entries and Substitutions

Entries will be limited to 20 stallions. Entries will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Priority will be given to stallions (including pony stallions) specifically aimed at the eventing market, thereafter in order of receipt of entries from all other sires which meet the eligibility criteria. The closing date for entries is 14 August. Please see entry form.

All stallions should be ridden unless there is a reason why they may not be presented under saddle (such as senior stallions that are no longer working under saddle but have already produced successful eventing horses).

Ridden stallions should show all three paces plus gallop. Each stallion will have a maximum of 3 minutes in the ring. It may be that stallions will enter the arena in groups of 2 or 3 designed to highlight a specific aspect of Eventing breeding but this will not affect the total exposure/display time of any of the stallions concerned.

Stallions shown in hand must show walk and trot and should be accompanied by at least one example of ridden progeny (stallions or geldings only as per above) who should show all three paces plus gallop. In this case, each stallion plus progeny will have a maximum of 4 minutes in the ring and must all appear together at the same time.

No substitutions are allowed after the closing date for entries which is 14 August 2009. Ring times and entry passes will be sent to you nearer the time.

In the event of bad weather the above may change, or in the worst case scenario, Burghley may decide that the parade cannot be held. If the weather is bad, please call 07725 332595 for an up to the minute report.

Admission

Each entry will receive one Friday horsebox vehicle pass. In addition 2 Friday admission tickets and 1 Friday public car park pass will be issued. No cars will be allowed to park in the Horsebox Park. Any vehicle coming without the appropriate pass will be charged the daily rate.

Dangerous Behaviour of Horses

If any horse or pony taking part in this parade is deemed by the organisers to be at any time behaving in such a way as to endanger the safety of any person, animal or property or any part of the venue where the parade is being held, including all working in arenas, horsebox parks and public areas, the organisers reserve the right to require the exhibitor or his or her representative to remove the horse from the venue immediately. In the event of such a termination, no refund of entry fees will be allowed.

Health and Safety

Exhibitors must adhere to all relevant BEF, British Eventing and Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Health and Safety legislation, policies and guidelines at all times and not to put themselves or anyone else at risk. Exhibitors, spectators and all other persons are advised to bear in mind that all horses, particularly stallions, can be easily frightened and can be dangerous. Members of the public are requested to keep clear of all horse areas and to avoid behaviour that might alarm horses. Children must be supervised at all times.
