British Breeding Futurity Young Horse Evaluations 2007 One of the BEF’s aims is to improve the quality of British bred horses and ponies, to increase the number capable of carrying British international riders to success at the highest level. They aim to see sustained improvement in temperament, athlectisim and soundness. In order to do this they hold a series of evaluations throughout the country each year sponsored by Baileys and award premiums. The Futurity Young Horse Evaluations series has been developed to encourage breeders, owners and trainers of eligible horses and ponies from foals through to six years old to bring them forward for evaluation annually and identify talented horses early in their careers. In an evaluation, which is not a show, horses are measured against a set of fixed potential performance indicators for each discipline, not against each other. This means that if a horse achieves a lower score against the fixed set of criteria, it may be better suited to another discipline. The evaluations are split into sections for show jumpers, dressage horses, eventers and sports ponies and then for each age group. ![]() The evaluation for the South West took place at the Grange Equestrian Centre near Okehampton on 30 August 2007. South West based Horse Transporter Claire Howarth’s Barum Stud part-bred Welsh youngstock took top honours in both the pony foal section and the three year old loose jumping section. The full sister and brother are by Claire’s Section D stallion Cwmcae Comet Bach, himself a prolific winner in the show ring and out of the ID/TB mare Royalbrook Supreme (by Diamond Rock). The yet unnamed chestnut colt foal scored an overall 8.6 to take top marks in the pony foal section. The three year old grey filly BARUM SILVER WILLOW gained an overall 9.02 in the pony loose jumping section. Both gaining premiums and Champions of their section. In addition they both received a Special Diploma and the foal was second nationally and BARUM SILVER WILLOW was top pony nationally and the only pony to score over 9. She now stands 8th overall nationally with all the horses and ponies. What an achievement! ![]() Barum Silver Willow Janet Hardy |
