Saturday 6th March, 2010 Almost 300 members of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society attended the 110th AGM held at the Arts Centre, Aberystwyth on Saturday 6th March under the presidency of Mr William Lloyd of the Geler Stud. Mr Stuart Franklin, chairman of finance led the members through the balance sheet which showed a turnover of £1.27m. He announced the purchase of Bronaeron School near Aberaeron to become the new Offices for the Society following refurbishment. Membership stands at 8,020 made up of 1,756 life members and 6,264 annual members. Ms Anna Prytherch who was Chief Executive from 1994 to 2001 is returning to this post.
The Brodrick Memorial trophy was awarded to the late Mr J. Giles of the Leyeswick Stud for Leyeswick Flyer, education bursaries to Gareth Watkins, Claire Alison and Michael King and Young Achievers award to Catrin Reed. Gillian McNinch was installed as Young Ambassador-Elect.
Brightwells Sales trophies were presented to Mrs Ann Overton-Ablitt (Fayre Oaks), Miss Adel Davies (Royal Welsh), Mr Alun Hughes (foal), Mr Colin Tibbey (Individual), Mr John Gray (brood mare) and Mr Chris Davies (Mrs Cuff memorial for section B). Sire rating trophies were awarded to Mr Gareth Parry (Cwmhendy Buster A), Mr Robert Hensby (Laithehill Oberon, B), Mr Wayne Groucott (Bryncarreg Lightning Jack, C) and Messrs Meirion and Caleb Evans (Gwynfaes Culhwch, D). Honorary life memberships were conferred upon Mr David and Mrs Janet Brake (Penycrug), Mr Roger Davies (Hafdre), Mr Arwyn Hughes (Cefncoch), and Mr George Mitchell (Dycott) and Honorary Life Vice-presidency upon Mr Len Bigley (Llanarth), Mr Mike Daley (Vale), Mr Teifion Davies (Gwenllan), Mr Dai Jones MBE (Llanilar), Mr Richard Rowlands (Hwylog) and Mr Dewi Williams (Rhandir).
The Publicity Officer, Dr Wynne Davies thanked the staff for compiling the Society’s web-site which, over the year, amounted to 130 pages and 278 photographs of Show, Sale, Open Day and Conference reports in addition to the official Society information. There had also been regular reports in the daily and weekly press and monthly and annual journals both at home and overseas. The Society’s journal of 776 pages had appeared two weeks ahead of schedule thanks to the editor Mr David Blair and Cambrian Printers staff; the advertising income had increased from £59,000 to £65,000. Sales of “Sixty Years of Royal Welsh Champions” (J A Allen/Robert Hale) had boosted the Society’s funds and there are only a limited number remaining. Another publication “Welsh Ponies and Cobs, Ceredigion Champions” (Gwasg Gomer) is due to be launched in May. ![]() Dr Wynne Davies, Publicity Officer photograph by Mili Peel Votes of thanks to the retiring President were given by Mr Peter Jones (Menai) and Mr Eric Davies (Maesmynach). Mr Terry Court (Brightwells) was installed as President with Mrs Kathleen James (Highland and organiser of the Performance Competition for many years) as president-Elect. Elected onto Council to serve for 2010 – 2012 were Mr Nigel Burton (Pentrefelin), Mr Mike Daley (Vale), Mrs Ann Jones (Frongoch), Mr Robert Manchip (Ffald) and Mr Martin Waters (Solloway). ![]() Mr Peter Jones, Menai Stud photograph by Mili Peel
