Decorated doorway welcomes members into the hotel

The Annual General Meeting of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society was held at the Hilton Metropole Hotel, Birmingham on 1st March under the Presidency of Mrs Elizabeth Mansfield of the Rotherwood Stud. There were overseas members present from the Continent and from the USA.

The minutes of the previous AGM held on 10th March 2007 were confirmed. Then the Chairman of Finance, Mr John Russell guided members through the balance sheet showing an annual turnover of almost £830,000.

Miss Sue Hardy, Chairman of Council gave the annual report which included a report of the new standing committees which have met over 60 times, the new purpose-built exhibition unit, the 2008 Judging and Showing Handbook, the International Workshop which was held in Cardiff on 2nd February, observers being allowed into Council meetings, co-operation with PONT regarding conservation policies of registered ponies on the hills, compulsory microchipping and the retirement of long-standing members of Council under the new Articles of Association: Dr Wynne Davies, Mrs Mary Edwards, Miss Laura Hutchins, Mr Daniel Morgan and Mrs Jocelyn Price.


Mrs Mansfield makes a special presentation to Dr Wynne Davies to mark his retiral from Council after 54 years service.

10,332 animals were registered during the year, 3,670 A (36%), 1,152 B (11%), 1,079 C (10%), 2,504 D (24%) and 1,927 Welsh part-breds (19%). Total transfers amounted to 11,164 and 550 stallions were issued with stallion licences. Exports totalled 393 led by 77 to Holland followed by 58 to Eire, 56 to Germany, 49 to Sweden, 41 to Denmark and others to Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Finland, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Spain and the USA. Membership stood at 8,053 (1,793 Life and 6,260 Annual).

The Brodrick Memorial trophy was awarded to Mrs Llinos Spenser who retired from the WPCS staff after 36 years of loyal service. Bursary awards are given to young members to assist them with the continuation of their equine-related studies, the 2008 bursaries were awarded to the Misses Jane Logan, Jessica Collard, Lowri Rhiannon Powell and Mr Robert Bryn Jones. Miss Alex Kelly and Mr Daniel Hughes were installed as joint Young Ambassadors. In-hand sire rating trophies were presented to Mr Gareth and Mrs Mavis Parry (Cwmhendy Buster, A), Mr Dewi Evans (Eyarth Tayma, B), Mr Peter Hussey (Hengwys Tywysog, C) and Mr Meirion and Mrs Dianne Evans (Gwynfaes Culhwch, D). The Performance Sire-rating trophies were presented to Miss A C Hill (Rudgate Royal Surprise, ridden), Mr John and Mrs Lindsey Milligan (Roseisle Pandytudur, lead-rein), Mr William Jenkins (Moelgwyn Dafydd Ddu, driving) and Mrs Diane Jordan (Wyken Rob Roy, working hunter pony). The Olympia ridden best of breed trophies were presented to Mrs Edwina Waller (Delami Destiny, A), Ms H W Roberts (Moelgarnedd Myrddin, B), Mr David Bright (Waxwing Rheel, C) and Miss C T Richardson (Drumacre Lloer Solo, D). The Derwen Spoons to the breeders of the top ridden geldings at the Royal Welsh Show were awarded to Mr Kevin Cousins (Treowen Rhys, A), Mrs K Allen (Barkla Royal Heir, B), Mr and Mrs T H Jones (Maenan Captain Corelli, C) and Mrs R M Evans and Miss G V Jones (Morlena Imran, D). The Debbie Dunbar painting of a Royal Welsh champion this year went to the section A: Messrs Alan and Adrian and Mrs Jan Pearce’s Glyncoch Hyfryd.

Mr Terry Court and Miss Catryn Bigley presented the Brightwells Champagne Moment awards: Mrs Carol Jones (Fayre Oaks Sale), Mr John Emlyn Jones and family (Royal Welsh Sale), Mr Mark Swistun (Royal Welsh Sale special award), Mr Cerdin and Mrs Doreen Jones (highest priced foal award) and Messrs Peter and John Gray (highest priced brood mare award).

Dr Wynne Davies, Publicity Officer described various talks given at home and abroad during the year, the record-breaking prices achieved at Sales, Welsh ponies and cobs securing all the main awards at the World Driving Championships, the Welsh part-bred Langarth Darcy representing Britain at the European Eventing championships in Rome, unbeatable record at HOYS including Waxwing Thumbs Up (section A first-ridden gelding) winning the supreme Pony Of The Year, Menai Sparkling Imperial Champion ridden M&M, Glyncoch Hyfryd champion In-hand, Halnaker Marten WHP Of The Year, Roseberry Highland Fling Riding Pony Of The Year, Hightops Dancing Bee Mini Show Pony Of The Year and Trehewyd Brenin Arthur Harness Champion Of The Year. Drumacre Lloer Solo (D) was 2nd at the Olympia Ridden Championships and Delami Destiny (A) 3rd. Mitcheltroy Master was supreme of the WPCS Performance Competition with 8,650 points.

Votes of thanks were proposed by Dr Wynne Davies and seconded by Mr Tom Best for her unstinting work during the year were given to retiring President Mrs Elizabeth Mansfield who travelled all over Britain and the Welsh hills during her year of office. Mr Len Bigley (Llanarth) was elected as President and Mr William Lloyd (Geler) as President-Elect.

As a result of postal ballot the following were elected to serve on Council for the period 2008 – 2010: Mr Dewi Evans (Hilin), Mr Jeff Parry (Talponciau), Mrs Jan Pearce (Glyncoch), Mr Edwin Prosser (Mintfield) and Mr Keith Spenser (Felinmor).
