Dressage

As the demand for suitable horses in all areas of equestrianism increases, there are a significant number of breeders choosing to produce horses through cross-breeding with native breeds. The Welsh Part-Bred horse is one result of this practice.

A Welsh Part-Bred horse:

  • has a minimum of 12.5% registered pure Welsh blood. The Welsh input comes from either the sire or dam. They may also be the result of crossing two 12.5% Welsh animals or from any other combination which ensures the qualifying 12.5%
  • is over 14.2 h.h
  • is eligible at any age for registration in the Welsh Pony & Cob Society's Part-Bred Register.

"They have the movement and character to work in all spheres"
Jennie Loriston-Clarke
International Dressage Rider

History

Welsh Cobs have been crossed with many types and breeds of horses. These include Irish draughts, Warmbloods, Cleveland Bays, Arabs; however, the most popular cross is the Welsh Cob crossed with a Thoroughbred.

Achievements

Welsh Part-Bred horses are increasingly in evidence in every aspect of equestrian sport such as dressage, showjumping, driving, eventing and in the show ring.

Choosing Welsh Cobs for Breeding

The points to look for include:

  • Size: but keep to type in depth, action, quality
  • Length of rein
  • Temperament
  • Movement: strong hock action with hind leg brought well forward underneath the animal, promoting and allowing freedom of the shoulder, without too much knee action
  • Good bone: with clean flat joints
  • Soundness
  • Performance

Equal attention needs to be given to the selection of the non-Welsh parent.

As selective breeding programmes using Welsh bloodlines become established, greater numbers of quality welsh Part-Bred Horses will become available. The cross is beginning to attract the recognition it deserves for breeding versatile horses for competition, leisure, or showing and looks set to be the competition horse of the future.

What leading people in the horse world have to say about horses with Welsh Cob in their breeding:

"…there is a little to approach the Welsh breeds as the basis for competition horse production"
Capt. E. Hartley-Edwards, Horseman and author

"I wouldn't mind a strain of welsh blood in an Event horse, their character and native cleverness are great strengths."
Rodney Powell, Event rider

"I'd regard it as an advantage to have a strain of Welsh Cob blood in a potential competition horse's pedigree"
Stephen Hadley, Show-jumper

"They are a useful foundation, when mated to a Thoroughbred, to breed an event horse"
Sam Barr, Breeder, Welton Stud

"Welsh Cob is a great cross - it's sound and tough"
John Rawding, Breeder, Church Farm Stud

"They have a lot of presence and are very good rides; I'm happy to have horses with Welsh blood"
Robert Oliver, Producer and Rider of Show Horses
